This scare tactic has been brought to you by the State of Minnesota.

Now, they want you to rush out and get a mammogram. If you can't afford it, they'll help you pay for it. They don't warn you that if you don't have breast cancer,  mammograms can help you get it. They don't tell you that the x-rays from mammograms can cause cancer. They just want you to know that if you do have breast cancer or will someday have it, that your local hospital has prepared for you a million and one ways  to poison you, zap you, and cut you up into little pieces.

If our government really cared about our health, they would publish and mail to you brochures on foods that fight cancer and methods of detoxing your breast tissues (even Linda McCartney's breast tissues contained DDT and PCBs.)

Our government would promote organic farming and sustainable agriculture.

Our government would offer health care, not disease care.

Instead, our government will continue to promote the business of cancer, because business is what makes America run.

Enclosed with the above brochure is the following enigmatic letter.
Its purpose?
To promote the business of cancer, of course.

Dear Your Name,

I recently entered into a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission regarding advertising claims for Rene Caisse’s Original Herbal Tea Remedy, also described as "Rene Caisse’s Essiac Tea" or "Essiac Tea" ("EssiacTea"). The agreement does not constitute an admission by me that I have violated any law. As part of that settlement, I agreed to send you the following message prepared by the FTC about the science on Essiac tea and disease:

Not much scientific research has been done on Essiac tea. The research that has been done, however, does not demonstrate that Essiac tea is an effective remedy in fighting cancer or any other disease. One group that looked into Essiac tea as a possible cancer remedy, the Canadian Breast Cancer Initiative, wrote: "No formal clinical studies demonstrating that any observed positive outcomes in cancer patients can be attributed to the use of Essiac rather than to other therapies or to the natural history of the disease were found." The group assessed the science on cancer and Essiac: "Weak evidence of effectiveness. Little evidence of harm. This is a widely used agent which has been incompletely studied."

If you are interested in the scientific research that has been done on alternative cancer treatments including Essiac, you may want to read a report published by the US Office of Technology Assessment. The report is called, "Unconventional Cancer Treatments," and was published in 1990. Chapter 4 deals with herbal treatments including Essiac. The report collected the available published studies on Essiac tea and other alternative cancer remedies. According to the report, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York conducted tests on Essiac tea in the 1970s and 1980s to see if the tea had any success in shrinking tumors or retarding their growth rate. The tests did not reveal any effect on the tumors. The National Cancer Institute, an agency of the US government, also tested Essiac tea in 1983, and again no anti-tumor activity was noted. A study conducted by an agency of the Canadian Government, based on physicians’ reports on patients who were trying Essiac tea, also showed no positive results. According to the Office of Technology Assessment, the Canadian agency "concluded that this review provided no evidence that the progression of cancer in these patients had been altered by taking Essiac."

Even less is known about the effectiveness of Essiac tea in remedying other diseases. There are no formal clinical trials indicating that Essiac tea is effective in alleviating or curing any disease. You should also know that, while most studies don’t indicate serious adverse health effects from taking the tea, the studies do note that some people experience nausea, vomiting, or other possible side effects.

If you do take Essiac tea, you should make sure to let your doctor or health professional know because of potential interactions with other treatments.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Miller

As usual, the prepared statement by the FTC is filled with misinformation. They try to tell you that ESSIAC is worthless, but slip in a little bit of the truth accidentally with "has been incompletely studied." That is the truth. The studies at the NCI and Sloan Kettering were paid for with your tax money and were intended to prove, from the get-go, that ESSIAC was worthless. The did this by freezing the solution, in one study, and by using 20 year old herbs in another.

The simple fact is, and this has recently been ratified by scientific studies, the herbs in ESSIAC contain properties that support liver function (the liver fights cancer), detox the blood, and fight tumors.

In this author's estimation, ESSIAC is not the most potent alternative available, though I would still drink it daily as part of a complete regimen to fight cancer. In simple fact, I do drink it as a preventative.

Dr Brush, JFK's personal physician, modified the original formula and used it to beat his colon cancer. The new formula is called Flor-Essence and can be found at most health food stores.

The following is a list of herbs in ESSIAC and Flor-Essence along with their properties, according to The Herb Book, bye John Lust and The Herbal Index found at http://www.metromkt.net/viable/herbdesc.shtml which lists FDA (and FTC) approved descriptions of actions attributed to the herbs listed (proven by our modern science).

Burdock: used to purify the blood, to treat gout and ulcers, arthritis, rheumatism, and cure skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis. In India and Russia, the root is a popular anti-cancer remedy. The volatile oils of burdock seed are said to be an effective diaphoretic, used to inducing sweating as an aid in neutralizing and eliminating toxins from the body. This activity is widely utilized by herbal practitioner's in the treatment of liver problems, gallstones, flu, and to support the kidneys in filtering acids from the blood stream.

Sheep Sorrel: a tea made from the leaves and stem will act as a diuretic, and may be helpful for gravel and stones.

Slippery Elm: the inner bark of slippery elm is noted primarily for its soothing properties. Internally it is helpful where inflammatory irritation exists, as in sore throat, diarrhea, dysentery, and many urinary problems and has anti-tumor properties.

Turkey Rhubarb: considered a safe and simple purgative which has been used extensively to quickly empty the bowels with no after-constipation effects. It acts both as a laxative in cases of constipation, and as an astringent in cases of diarrhea. Turkey rhubarb has also been shown to improve appetite, increase salivary & gastric flow, and promote healthy liver function & bile flow.

The following herbs have been added to ESSIAC to create Flor-Essence:

Blessed Thistle: regarded as an excellent appetite stimulant, and is used in the manufacture of "bitters" to be taken before meals to stimulate stomach and intestinal activity, and aid in digestion and circulation. It is also used in the treatment of constipation and flatulence, and is considered an excellent heart tonic and blood purifier. Blessed Thistle tea is used by contemporary herbalists for the treatment of a variety of liver problems, such as jaundice and hepatitis. Because painful menstruation can involve the liver, Blessed Thistle is a common component of herbal formulas used to relieve menstrual symptoms.

Red Clover: used in America for over 100 years to treat and prevent cancer, and also as a sedative for whooping cough. In Europe, Red Clover has been used as a diuretic to treat gout, and also as an expectorant. Because of its high content of several important nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, Red Clover has become a dependable nutritive supplement in all forms of degenerative disease. Antibiotic tests on Red Clover have shown it to possess activity against several bacteria, the most significant of which is the pathogen that causes tuberculosis. Red clover has also been used effectively as a blood purifier, an antibiotic (used for tuberculosis and to fight other bacteria), a relaxant, and an appetite suppressant.

Obviously, our government is more interested in wealth than health; more interested in treating disease than preventing it, more interested in preserving it that healing it. In the face of the growing evidence that mammograms DO NOT lower death rates for breast cancer, to keep the economy going, you might consider toasting your breasts at your local hospital. Your government will be proud of you.

And what of still more evidence that mammograms actually cause cancers? It shouldn't take a rocket surgeon to tell you that the amount of radiation you get during mammogram is dangerous. Here is an option: Thermography

The focus in Medicine should be the patient, right? The focus of Natural Medicine is also the patient, however in Natural Medicine, YOU, the PATIENT are asked to take responsibility for your own health. In conventional medicine, "they" take care of everything:

"What did they say?"

"What are they gonna do?"

"They gonna take it out?"

"They gotcha on chemo?"

It's them and they tell you what you are going to do with your body. If they'd told us what to do with our bodies in the first place, told us the truth about nutrition, toxins, and that advertising is the lie you buy into because it tastes good, feels good, or looks good, if they'd told us what to do then, they wouldn't have to tell us anything right now.

It has been said that every person will live the life s/he chooses. This is so true. We cannot force someone to live a healthy life style. Eat what you want, drink what you want, think what you want.

Insurance companies tell us that the bulk of its expenditure for one person occurs in the last weeks of that persons life as s/he lies hooked up to tubes and monitors in an intensive care ward trying to squeeze out just a few more moments on this planet. If the mind is still working it is a whirlwind of regrets and "if onlys."

When we take charge of our health, trust in our bodies' natural healing ability, and feed it the nutrition it needs, we are rewarded with a higher quality of life and fewer regrets. That is how simple it gets. Blessings.
