How To Eat Fruit Correctly

Some of this stuff’s been around for years.

One thing you’ll notice about viral emails is if you search the web for key phrases in them, you’ll find hundreds (possibly thousands) that simply post the entire piece and never check their veracity.

This particular email has been around the block so often that hitchhikers have hopped aboard. Little bits and pieces of older viral emails have been added to them.

It took a while, but I found the original piece had been written by Devagi Sanmugam, a chef from Singapore. This took me hours. Funny, but had I gone to Snopes right away, I would have immediately found it. I didn’t go to Snopes right away because it was obviously a conglomeration of myth, rumor, and legend, which I didn’t need Snopes to tell me.

Here is the piece as it came to me (the email will be in a blue text to distinguish it from my commentary):

Fruits and juices is one of the strategies to heal cancer. As of late, my success rate in curing cancer is about 80%. Cancer patients shouldn’t die. The cure for cancer is already found. It is whether you believe it or not? I am sorry for the hundreds of cancer patients who die under the conventional treatments. Very few can live for 5 years under the conventional treatments and most live for only about 2 to 3 Years. The conventional treatments do not make any difference because most cancer patients also live for about 2 to 3 years without undergoing any treatment. It is difficult to cure those cancer patients who have undergone chemo and radiotherapy as their cells are toxic and weak. When there is a relapse, the cancer will spread very fast as the resistance Is poor.  


It's long but very informative. We all think eating fruits means just Buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat. What is the correct way of eating fruits?    IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.   If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your System, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.   FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.  Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The Slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the Intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the Whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit Comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.....   So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals!  You have heard people complaining every time I eat watermelon I Burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel Like running to the toilet, etc.  Actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the Putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!   Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the Eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach. There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, Health, energy, happiness and normal weight.   When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT From the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because You must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on A 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit Juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends Tell you how radiant you look!   KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, Vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a   low Vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the Activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon Cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total Antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from Cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.  

ORANGE: Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds Away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.  

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene * the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.    

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS  NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.  

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.   Read this....It could save your life!!

The original piece published by Devagi Sanmugam only talked about fruit and how to eat it. The part about the doctor who fights cancer with fruit was added to give the piece and air of truthiness (thank you Stephen Colbert). We worship doctors in America, and if a doctor says it, it must be true.

The email circulates with two different stories about the doctor. One story has the author meeting him at a Christian conference. The other relates the response in a letter (email or snail mail isn’t known); the doctor responds to questions from the author. This one just has a statement by the doctor, and then an excerpt from Sanmugam’s piece, and then a bit about the nutrition of different fruits (a lot of disinformation), and then two other viral pieces that have been added to the email as it has circulated.

First about the doctor.

I truly doubt his existence. I have searched every medical database I know of and have yet to find him. If he’s been curing cancer (at a rate of 80%) using fruit you’d think that one of the 20 million people to visit my site would have told me about this.

The first part of this piece, the introduction, sounds like it was written by a non-English speaking writer. The stats that follow (supposedly by Dr Mak) are close, but still off, so they do lack any authority. The last study I’ve read (and mentioned at our site) showed that people who did nothing for their cancer lived up to 12 years after their diagnosis as opposed to those who underwent “heroic” measures.

Now comes the part that even Snopes calls “false:” food combining.

Eat fruit on an empty stomach.

It’s amazing how many people get all bent up over this one. Snopes says it’s false. Many physicians and dieticians say this is false. I went to see what Dr Andrew Weil (the guru of integrative medicine) had to say about this, and what he said boils down to, hogwash, the human digestive system can take anything we give it.

If so, then why are antacids the most purchased over the counter medication in America? And why does heartburn go away in people who try mono diets, or semi-mono diets, or food combining?

Sure, our digestive system can take anything, but should it? I can take a blow to the head, but is it really all that good for me? Houdini could take a blow to the stomach, but died when someone punched him and he wasn’t ready. He’d had a appendicitis attack and the blow burst the appendix.

Food combining is a controversial topic, mainly because at one point there was a food combining weight loss diet that turned out to be a flop some time ago. Dieticians are constantly debunking all these food combination routines, yet they still tell us that eating our dessert last is the best way to have sweets since the roughage from our meal keeps the sugar in the dessert from spiking our blood pressure. So here we do have a bit of food combining advice straight from the people debunking food combining.

Now it is true that eating fruit on an empty stomach allows the fruit to exit the stomach and be digested and absorbed by the small intestines. This we know. However, if mixed with other foods, it will not “rot” or “ferment” in the belly. Even I bought into this theory years ago (and probably had to apologize and correct it), but we know that food does not rot in the stomach, nor does it ferment. Fermentation of our food, if there is any, would occur in the large intestine.

We do know that people with too little acid (most stomach problems involve too little acid, contrary to the belief that too much acid causes acid indigestion) keeps your food longer in your belly where it can “bubble” up to the esophagus causing reflux. But this is a long way from rotting and fermenting.

Then, if we take into consideration that the first humans on the planet were hunter/gatherers, we know that they ate a wide variety of foods, but usually just one at a time. Since our bodies haven’t changed much from that period, eating fruit first, then the rest of our meal would make sense.

So, I’m going to propose that we eat fruit on an empty stomach to properly digest it, but I’m not going to make this a hard and fast rule.

Again, we just have to look at all the digestion problems we face in this country to know that something is very wrong with what we eat and the way we eat. Again, it cannot be over emphasized that people who follow food combining rules have discovered that their digestion problems go away.

This subject will never be closed until conclusive studies are conducted, but don’t hold your breath. Research money in this country is aimed at drug studies, not food studies.

Will grey hair, balding, etc. end if we eat fruit on an empty stomach? No. 

On the subject of fruit and cancer, well, this is close enough to the truth to be accepted by non-critical thinkers, of which our country has a surplus.

Berries are packed with elligac acid which does fight cancer. Then there are the bioflavonoids which also seem to help, and of course there is resveratrol. All the phytochemicals in berries are just good for us. I’ve received testimonials from two readers who beat their prostate cancer using red raspberries. Yes, berries are powerful cancer fighters.

The Fox Grape (a wild concord) is also a powerful cancer fighter.

However, a few oranges will not help you stave off a cold. According to Linus Pauling you’ll need 6 – 10 thousand milligrams of vitamin C to help you there (and a lot more if you do get sick). Four oranges supply about 250 mg of vitamin C.

Watermelon does not come “packed with a giant dose of glutathione.” It does help the body create glutathione. It’s also a great foot bath.

Strawberries do not contain the “highest” total antioxidant power. Goji berries and acai berries are in the lead in this area.

The guava does contain the most vitamin C of all fruits, but that comes out to around 125 mg. The papaya contains about 95 mg. The papaya contains a lot of fiber, and if you are eating fruit, that fiber will keep your blood sugar from spiking.

And finally, the added paragraphs about drinking ice water with a meal and the heart attack advice are totally worthless.

These are the hitchhikers who hopped on along the way.

If you put an ice cube in with your food, by the time it’s half way thru your small intestine, the ice will have melted. The temperature of digestion is 100 degrees. Put an ice cube on the sidewalk when the temp hits 100 and tell me how long it lasts. This is pure bunk.

I was almost waiting for the heart attack piece to tell me to cough to save my life. This stuff just circulates and circulates and everyone passes it on thinking they’re doing you a favor.

They are not. Delete it. It could save a friendship.
