Good News (finally)

Welcome to the last newsletter we will publish in this manner. You have no idea how happy this makes us (and me, specifically).

Putting the newsletter together is a royal pain in the ass. Since the mailing process is long and tedious, we’ve tried to make the newsletter so big that it could take months to read all of it.

Making the newsletter takes longer than writing it because we use a Microsoft program that sucks. It’s just a pain.

The mailing is done by hand, after which, the ones that bounce back have to be gone over manually and those names removed. Then those who ask to be removed have to be removed and those who want to subscribe have to be added.

We have just found a way (an inexpensive way) to go totally automated, and from now on, the moment we post something to Facebook, we will also send it out in a short newsletter. If there is more to read, we will post links. If we’ve created a new article, we will post a link to that new article; a new recipe, same thing.

One thing we will never do is send you a link to a fake video claiming that the video will probably be taken down by the FTC soon, so go watch it. We will never send you something that is only an advertisement to buy something. If I find something I really like, I'll send you a notice. If you want to buy it too, go ahead. If not, store the information away just in case. But I will not fill up your in-box with special offers, crappy videos, and all the rest of that junk that really ticks me off. "Do not do to others what you do not what done to you."

I want to thank Carol Swanson, who upon reading that I was burnt out (in our last newsletter), sent me a link to a program to do mass mailings that was reasonably priced. After familiarizing myself with the program, I was suddenly a lot less burned out knowing that the tedious work would be done for me, and I could do what I like to do: research & write.

So, this is the last of the huge newsletters. From now on you’ll probably get at least one a week, and as always, it will be understandable, educational, and informative.

Update: Ok, so the programs and email accounts we purchased will not do what we want to do. We sent a test to our readers and after 250 emails, our account was shut down for spamming, even though we have a certified mailing list.

So, we contacted GoDaddy and signed up for their mass mailing program which will cost us a little over $300 a year.

When people send you a newsletter, they expect to make money. We are probably the only newsletter on the web that is not created for the purpose of making money. We’d love for you to support us by purchasing through our affiliate programs, but the purpose of our newsletter is to send our readers important and usable information.

So, to keep my sanity and to keep from being burnt out, we will spend the extra (even if it has to come out of my own pocket) to automate this process and allow me to do what I love to do: research and write.

Follow the Money

A friend sent me a link to a web site asking me if I’d ever heard of these people. I clicked on it (www.aspartame.org) and immediately felt like Alice after she’d fallen down the rabbit hole.

I was lavishly regaled with smiles and science all telling me how wonderful aspartame was for my body.

I slapped myself upside the head and began snooping around the website and learned of "this scientific study" and "that scientific study" showing aspartame not only to be safe, but to be really, really good for you and me.

Over 200 studies, apparently, have shown that aspartame is as safe as water (unless you’re talking water mixed with fracking chemicals).

From the get-go, I suspected something was amiss. I know the story of aspartame. I know how it was passed through the FDA and I will make short shrift of that story for you:

Aspartame was considered toxic by the FDA and they refused to okay it. For 16 years they refused to okay it. In 1977, G.D.Searle, the company making aspartame, hired Donald Rumsfeld as their CEO in an attempt to go around the FDA and push their product into the market politically. As luck would have it, Ronald Reagan was sworn into office January 20th, 1981 with Rumsfeld on his transition team. Before that month ended, the head of the FDA had been fired and replaced by Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes Jr., Rumsfeld’s handpicked puppet. One of Hayes’ first official acts was the approval of aspartame in dry goods. To complete the revolving door syndrome of Washington, two years later Hayes left the FDA and went to work with Searle’s public relations firm, Burson-Marsteller.

If you’ll look up Searle, you’ll see they were purchased by Monsanto. If you look up Monsanto and aspartame, you’ll find this page, Aspartame, and learn that Monsanto created two products from aspartame, NutraSweet and Equal, and that in 2000 they sold the NutraSweet company to JW Childs, and Equal was sold to Merisant. They go on to tout how a “significant” amount of scientific research on aspartame has been performed, and the FDA asserts that aspartame does not cause any diseases or illnesses. Aspartame remains legal in the U.S. and is still approved for general consumption by the FDA.” At the end of their spiel, they say: “For more information on aspartame, consider visiting www.aspartame.org.”

And now we’ve gone full circle having arrived back at the site I was sent by a friend; a site that heaps tons of praises on this zero calorie chemical that tastes like sugar.

How much would you like to bet that the studies performed on aspartame were the best studies money can buy?

Take the 1987 Schiffman study that the FDA cites again as again whose result concluded: no increase in headaches were seen in the Aspartame group. “In this population, Aspartame is no more likely to produce headaches than a placebo,” they proclaimed.

Any problems with this study? Here’s what we found at Is Aspartame Really Safe?

  1. Aspartame was given for only 1 day.

  2. he Aspartame was given in encapsulated form, thereby decreasing the toxicity by eliminating the sudden absorption of the excitotoxin amino acid and methanol. (Stegink,1987)

  3. The Schiffman study was partially funded by Monsanto/NurtaSweet and conducted at the Searle Center at Duke University.

  4. G.D.Searle is owned by Monsanto.

  5. Susan Schiffman performed her research at the “Searle Center” at Duke University.

  6. The Searle Center is under the guidance of William Anlyan, a former G.D. Searle Director.

  7. Schiffman is a former General Foods and G.D. Searle Consultant.

  8. The FDA itself assisted in the very design of the study protocol.

Do you see any conflicts of interest?

I decided to do a little checking and discovered that the site (aspartame.org) was run by the Calorie Control Council, which “is an international non-profit association representing the low-calorie and reduced-fat food and beverage industry. Today it represents 60 manufacturers and suppliers of low-calorie, low-fat and light foods and beverages, including the manufacturers and suppliers of more than a dozen different dietary sweeteners, fat replacers and other low-calorie ingredients,” according to their web site. If you look around, you’ll also find they represent: A Select List of Companies and Products Serving Health-Conscious Consumers."

Who are these companies? How about Coca-Cola and Archer Daniels Midland to name just two.

In other words, the Calorie Control Council is a front group. It is their job to convince the public that eating toxic crap is safe and actually very good for you.

It was the Calorie Control Council that, years ago, published that aspartame was safe for pregnant mothers. This infuriated Dr Russell L Blaylock enough to write the following letter (found at http://www.wnho.net/mh_aspartame_letter.htm ):

Dear Editor,

It has come to my attention that the Calorie Control Council, a front group for the NutraSweet Company, recently suggested that aspartame was safe for women to use during pregnancy, as well as by those with serious liver disease and phenylketonurics. This is the most serious breech of public trust in the history of this nation. There is not one long-term study of aspartame safety ever conducted on the offspring of pregnant women consuming aspartame. Yet, there are numerous studies indicating aspartame could pose a serious danger to both mother and infant.

For example, according to the National Collaborative Study for Maternal PKU, blood levels of phenylalanine, a major component of aspartame and a developmental brain toxin, should not exceed 6mg./dl. In a study of pregnant women it was found that aspartame consumption at commonly consumed amounts reached these levels in 42% of normal women and 100% of PKU carriers. One in fifty people are PKU carriers and do not know it. This same group concluded that levels of 10mg/dl held a serious risk of infant brain impairment. In this same study 15% of pregnant women reached this toxic level of phenylalanine and 36% of PKU carriers.

This means that fully a third of all babies born to PKU carrier mothers consuming aspartame foods and drinks risk varying degrees of brain damage. It is also known that the amount of toxic phenylalanine reaching the baby is twice as high as that in the mother's blood because the placenta concentrates the toxin. In addition, numerous metabolic breakdown products of aspartame are known to damage the developing infant's brain, including methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, diketopiperizine and phenylacetate. Aspartame has been shown by several studies to damage DNA, which can lead to cancer and degenerative brain disorders later in life. The risk of increased brain tumors in such a child would be enormous. Similar mechanisms of damage would be expected in those with liver disease. Studies on aspartame safety have shown that the product increases tumors throughout numerous organs, especially the brain. It was shown that brain tumor incidence increased over 47X in animals exposed to aspartame.

With the public concern over childhood obesity and diabetes, few are being told of the overwhelming evidence that early exposure to excitotoxins (as found in aspartame) consistently produce gross obesity and insulin resistant diabetes, just as we are seeing in our youth.

The promoters of aspartame use have been lying from the beginning and continue to use their money and political clout to cover up the real and present dangers of this toxic product.

(Dr. Blaylock is author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That KillsHealth & Nutrition Secrets to Save Your Life and Cancer Strategerieshttp://www.russellblaylockmd.com)

I learned that Lyn O’Brien Nabors was president of the Calorie Control Council and read her impressive references; a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Public Health.

She’s bright, alright, but does intelligence come with a sense of ethics?

I discovered she’s also President of the International Food Additives Council, another front group whose job is to convince us that food additives make our food pretty, pleasing, and tastier.

If you visit Snopes at all, you’ll see they’ve slowly dropped away from their original position on aspartame which was “it’s perfectly safe and those who say it’s not are wrong” to now just posting blurbs from a variety of organizations that support aspartame’s safety.

One of those organizations is a pseudoscientific group called American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). The ACSH pretends to be scientific and independent. However, the ACSH works hand in hand with the Calorie Control Council, which funds their “scientific” studies that later show up at the various Calorie Control Council’s web sites. Go figger.

In 1992, Monsanto and its subsidiaries, Searle and Nutrasweet Company gave ACSH $105,000.00. The ACSH is also funded by the petrochemical industry. Exxon, Union Carbide, Dow Chemical, DuPont, General Mills, and Uniroyal, just to name a few of the chemical companies that support them, annually donate some $600,000.00 to their coffers.

So now that you know who is paid to tell you what they want you to believe. When you buy a Coke, part of that money goes into the “circle of wealth” and comes back to tell you how good drinking a Coke is for you.

I want to tell you one more thing these organizations all do: They lobby congress.

And this is where this discussion concludes; this is the final step in a very overt and open plot to take away control of your body and health.

You see, all the money we’ve talked about is just a drop in the bucket compared to what has recently been spent in Washington DC bribing congress and the senate to slip the Monsanto Protection Act into an unrelated bill.

The president doesn’t have a line by line veto, so the bill passed.

Corporations are not people, they are better than people. They are super people with nearly unlimited powers to call the shots. They give money to politicians and if you think that has no influence on the way they vote, you must asleep.

Henry Kissinger said: “Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people.”

Either we stop Monsanto, or Monsanto will stop us.

World wide freedom_ The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan drew international attention a few years back for saying gross national happiness should trump gross domestic product when measuring a nation's progress. If you're going to prioritize happiness, the Bhutanese thinking goes, you'd better include the environment and spiritual and mental well-being in your calculations. (Not everyone in Bhutan is happy, and many leave as refugees, as Human Rights Watch and others have noted.)

But Bhutan, which has only 700,000 people — most of whom are farmers — has another shot at international fame if it can make good on a recent pledge to become the first country in the world to convert to a 100 percent organic agricultural system.

Harvard Study Confirms Fluoride Reduces Children's IQ

Posted: 01/28/2013 11:20 am

A recently-published Harvard University meta-analysis funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has concluded that children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have "significantly lower" IQ scores than those who live in low fluoride areas.

In a 32-page report that can be downloaded free of charge from Environmental Health Perspectives, the researchers said:

A recent report from the U.S. National Research Council (NRC 2006) concluded that adverse effects of high fluoride concentrations in drinking water may be of concern and that additional research is warranted. Fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, including effects on learning and memory ...

To summarize the available literature, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on increased fluoride exposure in drinking water and neurodevelopmental delays. We specifically targeted studies carried out in rural China that have not been widely disseminated, thus complementing the studies that have been included in previous reviews and risk assessment reports ...

Findings from our meta-analyses of 27 studies published over 22 years suggest an inverse association between high fluoride exposure and children's intelligence ... The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults ...

Serum-fluoride concentrations associated with high intakes from drinking-water may exceed 1 mg/L, or 50 Smol/L, thus more than 1000-times the levels of some other neurotoxicants that cause neurodevelopmental damage. Supporting the plausibility of our findings, rats exposed to 1 ppm (50 Smol/L) of water-fluoride for one year showed morphological alterations in the brain and increased levels of aluminum in brain tissue compared with controls ...

In conclusion, our results support the possibility of adverse effects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment. Future research should formally evaluate dose-response relations based on individual-level measures of exposure over time, including more precise prenatal exposure assessment and more extensive standardized measures of neurobehavioral performance, in addition to improving assessment and control of potential confounders.

Studies Have Repeatedly Linked Fluoride to Reduced IQ and Brain Damage

There are so many scientific studies showing the direct, toxic effects of fluoride on your body, it's truly remarkable that it's NOT considered a scientific consensus by now. Despite the evidence against it, fluoride is still added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

It amazes me that the medical (and dental) communities are so stubbornly resistant to connect the dots when it comes to the skyrocketing increase of cognitive decline in adults and behavioral issues in children (ADD, ADHD, depression and learning disabilities of all kinds). In fact, there have been more than 23 human studies and 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage. Fluoride can also increase manganese absorption, compounding problems, since manganese in drinking water has also been linked to lower IQ in children.

Reported effects of fluoride on your brain include:

• Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
• Damage to your hippocampus
• Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease)
• Reduction in lipid content
• Damage to purkinje cells
• Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency
• Impaired antioxidant defense systems
• Increased uptake of aluminum
• Accumulation of fluoride in your pineal gland

Six Facts You Need to Know About Water Fluoridation

Harmful Effects Have Been Known for Half a Century

What is perhaps most surprising is that the harmful effects of fluoride have been known by conventional medical organizations for over half a century. For example, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) stated in their Sept. 18, 1943 issue that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes. And, an editorial published in the Journal of the American Dental Association on Oct. 1, 1944, stated:

Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good.

Part of the problem is that it's an accumulative toxin that, over time, can lead to significant health problems that are not immediately linked to fluoride over-exposure. In a 2005 paper entitled "Fluoride -- A Modern Toxic Waste," Lita Lee, Ph.D. writes:

Yiamouyiannis' book, Fluoride, The Aging Factor, documents the cumulative effect of tissue damage by fluoride, commonly seen as aging (collagen damage), skin rashes and acne, gastrointestinal disorders, and many other conditions, including osteoporosis. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and the Safe Water Foundation reported that 30,000 to 50,000 excess deaths occur in the United States each year in areas in which the water contains only one ppm fluoride ...

Fluoride suppresses the immune system: Fluoride inhibits the movement of white blood cells by 70 percent, thereby decreasing their ability to reach their target. Yiamouyiannis cites 15 references in his pamphlet, Lifesavers Guide to Fluoridation, that document immunosuppressive effects of as little as 10 percent of the amount of fluoride used in fluoridated water ... Immunosuppressive effects run the gamut, from a cold that won't go away to increased risk of cancer and other infectious diseases.

Studies have shown that fluoride toxicity can lead to a wide variety of health problems, including:

• Increased lead absorption
• Disrupts synthesis of collagen
• Hyperactivity and/or lethargy
• Muscle disorders
• Thyroid disease
• Arthritis
• Dementia
• Bone fractures
• Lowered thyroid function
• Bone cancer (osteosarcoma)
• Inactivates 62 enzymes and inhibits more than 100
• Inhibited formation of antibodies
• Genetic damage and cell death
• Increased tumor and cancer rate
• Disrupted immune system
• Damaged sperm and increased infertility

Suppressed Science: Fluoride Link to Cancer

Long-lost research linking fluoride to cancer has resurfaced in a Dutch film clip featuring Dr. Dean Burk, who in 1937 cofounded the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) and headed its cytochemistry department for more than 30 years. In the taped interview, he equates water fluoridation to "public murder," referring to a study that had been done on the 10 largest U.S. cities with fluoridation compared to the 10 largest without it. The study demonstrated that deaths from cancer abruptly rose in as little as a year or two after fluoridation began. This and other studies linking fluoride to cancer were government-ordered but were quickly buried once fluoride was found to be linked to dramatic increases in cancer.

Study Points to New Culprit in Heart Disease - NYTimes.com

Die, meat eaters, die!

Well, that seems to be current meme. The China Study, the initial reports from the Framingham Study, and now this.

Here is the brunt of the research: TMAO levels are higher in meat eaters than in vegans/vegetarians. TMAO does not come from meat, but comes from bacteria in our digestives systems after they’ve feasted on the meat we’ve feasted upon. TMAO is “burped out” (yes, that’s what the NY Times tells us) by these bacteria, it enters the blood stream, then, according to the researcher’s theory, enables cholesterol enter the arterial walls while, at the same time, preventing the body from excreting excess cholesterol. (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/08/health/study-points-to-new-culprit-in-heart-disease.html?src=recg&_r=0)

But the real culprit (supposedly) isn’t the meat itself, but an amino acid in the meat known as L-carnitine.

Researchers found that the bacteria that turn L-carnitine into TMAO flourish more in people consuming quantities of L-carnitine, whether from meat for from sports drinks. L-carnitine is one of those supplements that help us burn fat and build muscle. It’s also found in quite a few so-called energy drinks. Thus the more bacteria the more TMAO produced, which was proven by the study when they fed meat to a vegan whose production of TMAO following the meal was negligible.

Now this is some very spooky stuff . . . until you take a better look at the study.

Most of the research was done on mice. TMAO caused heart disease in mice, which are, for the most part, vegetarian. TMAO to mice is a foreign substance. No matter what it does to them can be in no way any reflection on what it would do to a meat eater since to a meat eater it is not a foreign substance.

The human element of the study consisted of six people, five omnivores and a vegan.

This is not a study; this is the beginning of a study. If you are going to study L-carnitine as it relates to heart disease, you can bet there are cohort studies available from which to draw your data to produce a meta-analysis.

I did a search on the web and found that at the National Institute of Health’s own web site, a meta-analysis in which they found no correlation between eating red meat and CHD (coronary heart disease). http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2885952/

Looking further, I figured there must be information on L-carnitine and mortality, and sure enough, at the Mayo Clinic they’re performed a meta-analysis with this conclusion: “Compared with placebo or control, L-carnitine is associated with a 27% reduction in all-cause mortality, a 65% reduction in VAs, and a 40% reduction in anginal symptoms in patients experiencing an acute myocardial infarction. Further study with large randomized controlled trials of this inexpensive and safe therapy in the modern era is warranted.” http://www.medpagetoday.com/upload/2013/4/12/jmcp_ft88_4_2.pdf

Now, could there be a problem with TMAO production? I’d say, yes. Keep in mind that the study did not tell us whether the bacteria involved were good or bad bacteria. The Times did report that after administering an antibiotic that the meat eaters no longer produced TMAO, but really? The answer to all this is an antibiotic?

Sometimes the solutions to these problems are worse than the problems. For years, we’ve been told the following: “Eating too much saturated fat is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. A diet high in saturated fat causes a soft, waxy substance called cholesterol to build up in the arteries.”

This was right out of the Framingham’s initial report. The study went on for years becoming probably the largest heart study in the world (spanning three generations) and within a short time of producing its original findings, retracted them, but doctors, not knowing anything about nutrition hung onto the original reports and kept telling us that we’d die from eating too much saturated fat. So, instead, we started eating more grains, starches, got obese and began an epidemic of diabetes which leads to early death by CHD. Ironic, eh?

News today is entertainment and shock value. Since the advent of the Internet, 500 channels of television, blogs, and social media, we can get our news anywhere and everywhere. So to make someone pay attention to you, you have to entice them in with a teaser (“if you don’t read this you could be dead by morning”) or shock them: Study Shows Red Meat Will Kill You or Make You Turn Commie.

Could this be a problem? Yes. Can you lessen the problem? Yes.

First & foremost, maintain a healthy gut. Get your probiotics from yogurt, kim chi (Korean pickles), and healthy organic foods. If you can’t, then supplement. I have always preferred Sedona Labs’ iFlora products.

When you eat meat, eat grass fed beef that hasn’t been shot up with hormones and antibiotics.

Omegasentials – One of my favorite products, contains you healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids that raise your HDL levels and lowers your inflammation index.

NOW Neptune Krill Oil - 1000mg/60 Softgels– Probably the best form of Omega-3 fatty acids from fish in that you won’t find any mercury in the oils. Again, these raise your HDL levels because it’s not how much cholesterol you have but the ration of HDL to LDL. From Dr Stengler's newsletter:  "One omega-3 fatty acid, DHA, could cut your risk of death from coronary heart disease by 40 percent and CHD death due to arrhythmia by 45 percent. In addition, the omega-3 fatty acid DPA may slash your risk of stroke, while EPA could cut your risk of nonfatal heart attacks." (Keep in mind that Omegasentials contains mercury free DHA.)

Omega-7 – This is the latest form of omega essential fatty acids. The story is that a fry cook used it to clean the built up scum that was nearly solid on his deep fryers and on the pipes of the oil pit into which he dumped his old oil. Someone came to him with this special oil and it just dissolved the caked on oil. Later it was tested at the Cleveland Clinic and was found to raise HDL levels, lower inflammation (cutting C-Reactive Protein levels), lowered triglyceride levels, and lowered blood pressure. It basically cleans the arteries.

Ecklonia Cava Extract (Ecklonia Bicyclis Extract): from our article on Ecklonia Cava:

The endothelium is a thin layer of cells lining your blood vessels. Damage to the endothelial cells restricts blood flow leading to cardiovascular disease. Endothelial cells are damaged by free radicals and low grade infections in the blood. Then along comes LDL to bandage the damage, and if oxidized, begins the build up of plaque.

A clinical study of patients with damaged artery walls showed that after taking ECE for just six weeks, the arteries began to heal, increasing blood flow by more than 50%. The healthy arteries began generating nitric oxide again, which keeps artery walls open and relaxed.

It was also discovered that ECE halted the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which, if oxidized, damages the endothelial cells and builds plaque.

Researchers found that ECE is more effective at inhibiting the oxidation of LDL cholesterol than green tea catechins, and appears to scrub the plaque off the endothelial lining. ECE also reduces vascular inflammation by preventing oxidation, which directly affects the body's inflammatory response.

Nattokinase – Nattokinase is an enzyme made from a fermented soy product. NOW Nattokinase - 100mg/120 VcapsIt is a blood thinner. If you are using a blood thinner, do not take Nattokinase. However, Nattokinase is a blood thinner like none other. Aspirin is just dangerous. We’ve written about the problems with aspirin. Nattokinase has been used for hundreds of years for hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, poor circulation, peripheral artery disease, and hemorrhoids. The side effects or warnings is that if you have a bleeding condition, nattokinase could be dangerous. But just because your blood is thin, does not mean it cannot clot when needed and this is where Vitamin K comes in.

Solaray VITAMIN K-2 (MENAQUINONE-7) – comes from the same fermented soy product as (natto). Perhaps you remember us writing about how calcium supplements can lead to heart attacks. This is because of two things, one the calcium is not absorbed by the bones (due to a lack of vitamin d or magnesium) and it stays in the blood stream. Vitamin K2 puts the calcium back into the bones and helps your blood to clot.

Magnesium: is a very necessary mineral. As you age, you need more. A deficiency in magnesium makes you twice as likely to die. Magnesium lowers C-Reactive Protein, lowers blood pressure, relaxes the arteries. In fact, it is often referred to as the relaxing mineral. We need 300 mg per day.

Serrapeptase: we’ve written a lot about this too; it is used in Europe more often than NSAIDS for minor aches and pains. It has to be taken on an empty stomach. It is a proteolytic enzyme that lowers inflammation and has the side effect of cleaning plaque from your arteries.

Always remember that cholesterol is not bad for you; oxidized cholesterol is bad for you. Keep up your antioxidants and try these supplements. And your author personally uses all of these products on a daily basis.

As we go to print….

Since it takes about three weeks (working with this lousy Microsoft program) to put this newsletter together, we’re never going to scoop anyone on anything. For example, as we’re working on this newsletter, Mercola published an article on this NY Times article about TMAO levels. Interesting, his conclusion is just about the same as ours: Maintain a healthy gut. Here’s his article: Mercola

One of the good things about taking so long to create this is that people who are aware of what we’re writing about send us even more information such as this study performed at UCLA on probiotics and found that not only do they help heal all sorts of gut problems (diarrhea, IBS, spastic colon, etc) but that they actually affect our brains and emotions (pain relief too). Here is a link to that: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/probiotics-change-brain-activity-emotional-response

And one more thing, Simply the Best tells us that their inventory of iFlora hits the Best Used By date this month (April). My research shows that this simply means that at this point 30% of the probiotics have died off at this point. In another year, the die-off would be at about 50%. Well, apart from all this, they’ve told me to tell my readers that all you have to do is tell them that you know about this offer from the our newsletter (you can do this in a separate email to them or in the additional info space allotted by Pay Pal during your purchase)….if you notify them, everything they have: iFlora for Women (anti-candida), iFlora Nasal, and their iFlora will come to you TWO FOR ONE…until they completely run out and have to re-order (limited time). So, here is your link to Simply the Best: http://www.mnwp.org/s_labs/index.htm

Bee Venom Can Kill HIV, Study Says

Washington University School of Medicine scientists in St. Louis have discovered that bee venom can kill the HIV virus without harming the body. Very interesting! And another reason to save our bee's!!

Bee venom Kills HIV video:

Nanoparticles loaded with bee venom kill HIV,
by  Joshua L. Hood, MD, PhD

Nanoparticles (purple) carrying melittin (green) fuse with HIV (small circles with spiked outer ring), destroying the virus’s protective envelope. Molecular bumpers (small red ovals) prevent the nanoparticles from harming the body’s normal cells, which are much larger in size.

Nanoparticles carrying a toxin found in bee venom can destroy human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) while leaving surrounding cells unharmed, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown. The finding is an important step toward developing a vaginal gel that may prevent the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

“Our hope is that in places where HIV is running rampant, people could use this gel as a preventive measure to stop the initial infection,” says Joshua L. Hood, MD, PhD, a research instructor in medicine.

The study appears in the current issue of Antiviral Therapy.

Bee venom contains a potent toxin called melittin that can poke holes in the protective envelope that surrounds HIV, and other viruses. Large amounts of free melittin can cause a lot of damage. Indeed, in addition to anti-viral therapy, the paper’s senior author, Samuel A. Wickline, MD, the J. Russell Hornsby Professor of Biomedical Sciences, has shown melittin-loaded nanoparticles to be effective in killing tumor cells.

The new study shows that melittin loaded onto these nanoparticles does not harm normal cells. That’s because Hood added protective bumpers to the nanoparticle surface. When the nanoparticles come into contact with normal cells, which are much larger in size, the particles simply bounce off. HIV, on the other hand, is even smaller than the nanoparticle, so HIV fits between the bumpers and makes contact with the surface of the nanoparticle, where the bee toxin awaits.

“Melittin on the nanoparticles fuses with the viral envelope,” Hood says. “The melittin forms little pore-like attack complexes and ruptures the envelope, stripping it off the virus.”

According to Hood, an advantage of this approach is that the nanoparticle attacks an essential part of the virus’ structure. In contrast, most anti-HIV drugs inhibit the virus’s ability to replicate. But this anti-replication strategy does nothing to stop initial infection, and some strains of the virus have found ways around these drugs and reproduce anyway.

“We are attacking an inherent physical property of HIV,” Hood says. “Theoretically, there isn’t any way for the virus to adapt to that. The virus has to have a protective coat, a double-layered membrane that covers the virus.”

Beyond prevention in the form of a vaginal gel, Hood also sees potential for using nanoparticles with melittin as therapy for existing HIV infections, especially those that are drug-resistant. The nanoparticles could be injected intravenously and, in theory, would be able to clear HIV from the blood stream.

“The basic particle that we are using in these experiments was developed many years ago as an artificial blood product,” Hood says. “It didn’t work very well for delivering oxygen, but it circulates safely in the body and gives us a nice platform that we can adapt to fight different kinds of infections.”

Since melittin attacks double-layered membranes indiscriminately, this concept is not limited to HIV. Many viruses, including hepatitis B and C, rely on the same kind of protective envelope and would be vulnerable to melittin-loaded nanoparticles.

While this particular paper does not address contraception, Hood says the gel easily could be adapted to target sperm as well as HIV. But in some cases people may only want the HIV protection.

“We also are looking at this for couples where only one of the partners has HIV, and they want to have a baby,” Hood says. “These particles by themselves are actually very safe for sperm, for the same reason they are safe for vaginal cells.”

While this work was done in cells in a laboratory environment, Hood and his colleagues say the nanoparticles are easy to manufacture in large enough quantities to supply them for future clinical trials.

Probiotics reverse gut damage caused by antibiotics
In a series of four research papers, scientists have discovered that probiotics could be the key to a range of gut-related disorders.
In a study of 3096 patients regularly taking an antibiotic, the probiotic S. boulardii reduced the risk of drug-induced diarhhea by 60 per cent.

The probiotic B.infantis 35624 is effective as a natural anti-inflammatory in patients with ulcerative colitis. The researchers surmise that shifting the balance in the gut seemed to re-establish natural anti-inflammatory processes.

However, in another study – this time of 35,624 patients with irritable bowel disease (IBS) – the probiotic B. infantis seemed to reduce abdominal discomfort and bloating in most cases, but only as much as a placebo.

Ginger may be a powerful fighter against colon cancer

We already know ginger is a great anti-inflammatory and aids in digestion. There are many ways to get the ginger you need, including a great ginger brew you can find in some of your better stores.

Ginger, the popular spice, may help prevent colon cancer. It reverses colon inflammation, a key marker for the cancer – and the effect was seen after just 28 days.

The spice – which is the root of the Zingiber officinale plant – reverses inflammation by blocking eicosanoids, special signalling molecules in the central nervous system, which control the immune response of inflammation.

Researchers witnessed a ‘significant reduction’ in colon inflammation in a group of volunteers who took 2 g of ginger every day for 28 days compared to another group that were given a placebo.

The research team from the University of Michigan carried out the latest trial after discovering the spice the incidence and number of tumours in rats.

Ginger supplements prevent colon cancer

Ginger supplements prevent colon (colorectal) cancer – one of the most lethal types, researchers have discovered. Its anti-inflammatory qualities may also help a range of other diseases, too.

A research team from the University of Michigan Medical School tested 30 patients who were either given two grams of ginger root supplement every day for 28 days or a placebo.

At the end of the trial, those given the ginger supplements saw “significant reductions” in markers of colon inflammation, one of the most important precursors of colon cancer.

Children absorb 10 times more radiation from mobile phones than adults

Children who use mobile (cell) phones are absorbing dangerous levels of microwave radiation that are 10 times more than the amount adult users are exposed to – and they are at least twice over safety limits, scientists have revealed this week.
They absorb twice as much radiation to their heads, three times the level in the hippocampus and hypothalamus regions of the brain and eyes, and 10 times more radiation to the bone marrow compared to an adult.

Scientists from the US Environmental Health Trust, who made the discovery, are calling on new parameters for safe levels of radiation that are based on body size, and that take into account the fact that children are using the phones.

Children in the US are absorbing levels of radiation that are double the safe upper limit set by the country’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC), say the researchers.

Chemo targets cancer cells that were dying anyway

Chemotherapy may be taking too much of the credit when it ‘beats’ cancer – most of the cancer cells it is targeting were on the verge of self-destruction anyway, researchers have discovered.
At best, the therapy seems to speed the process of self-destruction, known as apoptosis, that every healthy cell is programmed to do. However, cancer cells have forgotten to self-destruct.

Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have discovered that chemotherapy is ineffective when faced with a cancer cell that is not close to apoptosis. They have developed a way of profiling that tells oncologists those patients whose cancer cells are likely to respond to chemotherapy.

But their research leaves open several questions: would those cancer cells that respond to chemotherapy have died naturally anyway, and if chemotherapy merely hastens a natural process, is it worth going through the debilitating effects this deadliest of drugs produce?

Canary Cattle in a Coal Mine

In Louisiana, 17 cows died after an hour’s exposure to spilled fracking fluid, which is injected miles underground to crack open and release pockets of natural gas. The most likely cause of death: respiratory failure.

In New Mexico, hair testing of sick cattle that grazed near well pads found petroleum residues in 54 of 56 animals.

In northern central Pennsylvania, 140 cattle were exposed to fracking wastewater when an impoundment was breached. Approximately 70 cows died, and the remainder produced only 11 calves, of which three survived.

In western Pennsylvania, an overflowing wastewater pit sent fracking chemicals into a pond and a pasture where pregnant cows grazed: Half their calves were born dead. Dairy operators in shale-gas areas of Colorado, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Texas have also reported the death of goats.

Salmon Confidential

Salmon Confidential is a new film on the government cover up of what is killing BC’s wild salmon. When biologist Alexandra Morton discovers BC’s wild salmon are testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, a chain of events is set off by government to suppress the findings. Tracking viruses, Morton moves from courtrooms, into British Columbia’s most remote rivers, Vancouver grocery stores and sushi restaurants. The film documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save BC’s wild salmon.

The film provides surprising insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as well as rare footage of the bureaucrats tasked with managing our fish and the safety of our food supply.

What a Bunch of Crap

Here is a “newsletter” I found one morning in my in-box:

Dear Underground Health Reporter reader:

Please find below a special message from our sponsor, Health Sciences Institute.  They have some important information.

Wishing you the best of health,

anica Collins

Dear Reader,

Can you believe this video? It's a phenomenon. In fact, it was sent to more than 289,000 people in just the first 24 hours!

But you might not see it at all.

Why? Because, for the first time, mainstream medicine's deadliest conspiracy has been EXPOSED. Finally, this video is the 'shot heard around the world' the establishment prayed would never come.

To be honest, I'm not sure how long this video will be available. There are powerful interests hell-bent on minimizing the damage it is doing to corporate medicine's profit machine.

Before it's banned. Watch it here.

To your best days,

Paul Amos
Associate Director, HSI

P.S. Wow. 366,062 people and counting. It's taking on a life of its own. Get the facts now.

This kind of hype just grinds my gears. One of our affiliate programs sent me something like this and I quickly fired off a response telling them that they just blew their reputation. They had always been honest and up-front until the point where they pressed me to watch some video that was about to be banned. I told them I cannot put up with bullshit and that I will not be an affiliate for any business that puts out this type of bullshit because I happen to respect my readers.

Interestingly enough, I got a response from the CEO of the company. He apologized saying that he hates this kinds of BS too and that he hadn’t seen the letter that had been sent out and that he would make sure nothing like that ever went out again. And he kept his word. I’ve not seen his organization send out anything like that since he gave me his word.

However, the clowns listed above, the Underground Health Reporter and Health Sciences Institute egregiously repeat this unacceptable practice and I’ve warned them both that I’ll drop them if they do it again.

They send out “videos” which are NOT videos but audios with words printed out. As far as I know, there’s never been a banned video on the internet. Google/YouTube won’t allow you to post porn and will remove them; but banned? You can find that porn somewhere else.

I dislike bullshit. I’ve cancelled my accounts with both of these clowns, and I tell you all this just as a warning.

Assertion v Aggression

It has been said that the best way to start an argument on Twitter is to tweet something.

Look up the word "argument" in a dictionary and the first definition you'll find has to do with: a quarrel or an altercation. Obviously, in this day and age, that's how arguments go. They are no longer "a process of deductive or inductive reasoning that purports to show its conclusion to be true" or "a sequence of statements one of which is the conclusion and the remainder the premises" but rather a reason to get downright nasty and hurl insults at another human being.

Personally, I love a good argument in the classical sense: a discussion in which reasons are put forward in support of and against a proposition, proposal, or case. Having attended many a panel discussion, I've never walked away without having gained something insightful; without having learned something.

Now take, for instance, a Facebook friend who posts a pretty picture with beautiful printing that spells out something like: "When you quit learning you quit living." Then go to that person's timeline and locate a place where someone disagrees with that person. Does the battle turn bitter? passive aggressive? or just outright name calling

Disagreements do not have to be disagreeable. But if you post that learning is living implying that you are open-minded and yet you hate being wrong and will fight off anyone who disagrees with you, then you are a liar.

Having taken up journalism for some twenty years, I know something about being wrong. Journalism is more than reporting. It's researching, re-researching, and then reporting on that research. The overall objective is all about uncovering the truth. And since we are humans, sometimes no matter how comprehensive and meticulous our research is, we still make mistakes.

As a journalist, I don't relish being wrong, but I do relish learning something; and that being the case, I always print a retraction and pass that learning onto my readers. You see, the only thing I don't like about being wrong is that I had worked so hard to be wrong. You'd think that hard work would make you right, but that's the chance you take when you start investigating subjects new to you and the chance you take when you sum up your experience into an article that is read by anyone who stumbles across it. To be a good journalist, you have to work hard. To be a great journalist, you have to be open to being wrong. If you find out you are wrong and neither learn from it nor make corrections, you're a hack.

In my business: You never have the right to be right unless you can admit you were wrong.

But why is it that, in this world, if we find something to be wrong, why can’t we just offer someone a correction and have that person take that correction to heart and thank us? Why can't the average person take a bit of criticism? Why can't you challenge a person's belief system without suffering an embittered and hostile response?

There are people who spend way too much energy proving themselves right while proving others wrong. These people I refuse to deal with because their sense of being is a castle built in the clouds. They are nothing beyond an overblown sense of self, derived out of derision.

There are those individuals, who, if you engage them in a bit of argumentation will very quickly take everything personal. We all know them. We have, at times, been them.

Let me start with this: Cartesian thought begins with "Cogito ergo sum" or "I think, therefore I am."

If we take it one step further, we can conclude that "I am the thinker," and one baby step further, "I am my thoughts."

Thus any attack on my thoughts is an attack on me.

Now let's jump ahead a couple of centuries and we find John Paul Sartre who said (I'm paraphrasing), "Wait a minute. I am not my thoughts. I am aware of my thoughts just as I am not that chair over there, but I am aware of that chair."

Thus Sartre concluded: "I think. I am 'aware' that I think. Therefore I am."

This is truly a quantum leap, if you think about it, for not only are we not our thoughts we are not the thinker. We are the person "doing" the thinking. We are the person aware of the thinking.

This is truly an awakening for some, while ignored by the most. Far too many people are heavily invested in their thoughts, their beliefs. An attack, no matter how slight or harmless, on those beliefs is taken as a personal attack by the person invested in those beliefs.

When you wake up, you realize you are not those beliefs, but rather you possess those beliefs. You are not just the thinker of those thoughts, but you are the person "doing" the thinking, and ultimately, thoughts can change given new data.

Attachment v Detachment

Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that triggers a protective state when we believe our thoughts have to be protected from others. One who is attached to a belief system who comes up against arguments contrary to that belief system experiences a rush of “fight or flight” chemicals such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, normally associated with survival. In this defensive state, the primitive part of the brain interferes with rational thinking and the limbic system knocks out most of the working memory, physically causing narrow mindedness.

No matter how innocent or valuable an idea is, the brain has trouble processing it in this defensive state; ideas that otherwise would be thought of as helpful were that person in a more rational state.

To someone detached from a belief system, new information is accepted readily and contrary information is processed rationally.

It is this detachment that the philosophers speak of, because it opens up channels to higher creativity, allowing the individual to experience the ever present and eternal now.

The first step in achieving detachment is first to realize your attachment. The moment you realize you are attached is the moment you start to sever that attachment.

Next time you read, hear, or see something that starts to set you off, feel it. Feel its intensity. It's a bodily feeling, not some sort of separate emotional feeling. You can feel it up and down your spine affecting nerves throughout your body.

The next step is to use your imagination.

Let's say you're at your computer and you find a comment to one of your posts that lights you up.

First admit to yourself that the comment has affected you. Feel it.

Then sit back, stare at the comment, and picture it coming at your body. But your body is transparent. You watch it go right through you and beyond, dissipating into the universe.

You will actually feel your bodily response fade, fade, fade away.

Then, and only then, will you be able to respond to the comment clearly, cogently, and concisely.

Unless, of course, you just want to be a troll and start flaming away. Then have at it.

It always boils down to your own choice.

To help you live in the present or, perhaps, just wake up a bit more, I always suggest to friends to explore the works of Eckhart Tolle. Here's a link to all of his work at Amazon. Personally, nearly every night I fall asleep listening to one of his lectures.
