Home Remedies: Cures
or Myths? Melanie Banzer
sets out to debunk an email that we will all receive at
least twice in our lifetime.
Every year, your government gives away
to the wealthy more than enough money to pay for health care
for every person who goes without it, and more, much much
more. Every American must read this book. David Kay Johnston
is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist.
It's been a rough
winter for some, and it's going to be a rough spring for
others. Living in Minnesota we're getting daily updates
on the flooding in the Red River Valley.
There are going to be
some changes here. First, we've gotten a lot of new
volunteers helping out. Some are writing, some
researching, others are proofing. And many other are
just helping out.
The most important
change we're adopting is to become more political.
Our first directory
contained the tagline: Healing the individual, the
community, and the world.
Thinking globally and
acting locally might be a nice theme, but to put it bluntly,
the health of our country and the health of our communities
are in crisis. Grassroots politics is the only thing that
works, or as they said in the sixties, "If you're not
part of the solution, then you're part of the problem."
In Minnesota, our
legislatures have just held an ad hoc meeting in which
testimony was heard concerning crooked judges. Thomas
Jefferson disliked the judicial branch because it had so
little oversight. In Minnesota, the judges have passed
laws protecting themselves, and even allowing small
bribes. We're supposed to elect our Supreme Court
Justices here in MN, but for years, the Governor has
gotten away with appointing them. One recent appointment
was asked about this situation, and he responded that he
had no opinion on it since he'd never served as a judge
previously; that he'd only been a practicing attorney.
So, expect a lot of
politics and ideas on how each of us can get involved.
NEW NEWSLETTER
SEARCH!
God Bless Google! In
the past we maintained an index manually to all our
newsletters. Google has a new specific search that
allows our readers to search ONLY our previous
newsletters. The only drawback we see is that it might
take a month or two before the most previous newsletter
is included in the search.
Simply look at the top
menu of our newsletter and where it says Subject Index,
just click there. You'll be brought to a search page and
you can type in anything you want. If it's in our
newsletters, it will pop up on the results page.
While you are on the
search page, you can see that above, in the drop down
menu, you'll see under the heading Newsletter, Search
Newsletter Index. That choice will also bring you to the
Newsletter Search Page.
One more special search
feature we have will be found in the cancer and
cardiovascular wellness articles. You can search ONLY
the cancer articles or ONLY the cardiovascular articles
for your particular terms. This is a wonderful new
feature.
Diamond V XPC Update
As
many of you know, the makers of Diamond V XPC created
EpiCor a powerful immune booster and I’ve been using
Diamond V XPC on my chickens rather than fill them with
antibiotics.
Well, it’s spring time again, and my chickens will be
arriving next month, and my shipment of Diamond V XPC
has arrived, only this year, I’ve ordered the ORGANIC
form, Diamond V XPC Green.
If
anyone wants a bag of this sent to them, I ask for a
donation to the Wellness Directory, as we are still
paying our legal bills.
The
Wellness Directory is NOT selling this; the bag of
Diamond V XPC is “mine” and I will send out bags to
people who donate to our cause.
Ron Sally has
developed a new cream we are currently testing. It's a
pain cream that works on arthritis pain, tendonitis, and
carpal tunnel.
It doesn't seem to work on lower back pain, though.
Interestingly enough, it also seems to clear up
psoriasis. One person who had psoriasis at a location
where he'd also had arthritis was in shock to find out
that it cleared up his psoriasis. It also seems to work
well on a variety of eczema conditions. If you would
like more information on this, and perhaps a chance to
try it at a special test price (before it goes on sale
retail) just write to me:

Deadly Psoriasis Drug Pulled from US Market
After being tied to at least 3 deaths (from a fatal
brain infection called PML, which Jenny Thompson told
you about in the e-Alert back on March 30), popular
psoriasis drug Raptiva has been -- or rather, will be --
yanked from the market by Genentech.
According to the FDA, by June 8, 2009, the drug will
be completely unavailable…at least in the U.S.
Don't wait 'til June to stop taking this deadly drug!
Call your doctor right away about tapering off Raptiva
-- stopping cold turkey can cause serious health
problems -- and finding a better way to keep your
psoriasis under control. But beware the other commonly
prescribed treatments…
Like methotrexate, which has been linked with severe
liver damage. Or cyclosporine, which can increase your
risk of hypertension and kidney problems. And let's not
forget the other immunosuppressants -- drugs like Enbrel,
Amevive, and Remicade -- all of which do exactly what
they're supposed to…suppress your immune system,
potentially setting you up for a whole host of deadly
infections.
Bottom line: Get off Raptiva quickly but safely. But
don't let your doctor switch you to an equally dangerous
drug. Ask him about ALL the options for treating your
psoriasis – and check the
HSI e-alert
archives for information about much safer natural
choices. [http://www.hsibaltimore.com/]

- Acai and Diet Scams
We posted this over a month ago.
Hitting the news lately are stories all about the Acai
Diet Scam frauds on the internet.
As an
investigative reporter, I personally checked out a bunch
of diet scams online and wrote up my results in an
article we published over a month ago right here: The Freebie Fraud -
Acai and Diet Scams.
Having mentioned a heavily hyped
"pamphlet" called Stop Cancer Before it Starts,
we thought we were through with this one, but NOPE, a
reader asked me to bust all the hype in the online
advertisement. So...I did; right here:

Heart Food, Brain Food;
Carnitine for
Better Health
By Melanie
Banzer
Editor's Note: We want you all to meet
Melanie Banzer, our latest volunteer researcher/writer
at this site. When I put out a call for volunteers,
Melanie responded and went right to work. We're very
proud to have her with us.
For sufferers of
hyperthyroidism, heart disease, kidney disease,
diabetes, high cholesterol, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, memory
problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a whole host of
other conditions, the supplement carnitine has promising
potential for healing.
Carnitine, a substance derived from amino acids, is an
important ingredient in many of the body’s cells. After
it is produced in the liver and kidneys, it is then
delivered throughout cells in the brain, heart, muscles,
and even male sperm, where it helps to convert fatty
acids into energy. By metabolizing fats into energy, it
optimizes the functions of all of the body parts it
serves. Carnitine is found primarily in animal meat, but
is also absorbed in lesser amounts through nuts, dairy
and asparagus.
[1]
As the main source of L-Carnitine is red meat, which is
unhealthy in abundant amounts (due to antibiotic
contamination, fat content, genetic modification, etc.),
supplementation is highly recommended for its
absorption. Even with a well-balanced diet, it is felt
that achieving an adequate amount of carnitine can be
challenging without supplementation.[2]
As supplements, carnitine
can be purchased as either L-Carnitine or Acetyl-L-Carnitine,
depending on the desired result. L-Carnitine is derived
from the amino acids lysine and methione and is
well-known for its ability to battle heart disease.
While more commonly known as L-Carnitine, this word is
actually an abbreviation for levocarnitine. It got its
name due to a levorotation (or counterclockwise
rotation) of it its molecular configuration.
[3]
This rotational pattern plays an important role in the
behavior and function of the supplement. Without its
left-handed molecules, it wouldn’t have so much to
offer.
On top of its protective
impact in the hearts of people with congestive heart
failure and angina, it can even be used immediately
after a heart attack to prevent cardiac complications
and decrease the likelihood of a later heart attack.[4]
Studies suggest that L-Carnitine assists in reversing
the effects of alcohol damage on the liver, repairing
damaged kidneys, increasing sperm count (and therefore
treating male infertility), treating shock (from blood
loss, infection, or heart attack), and minimizing the
symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Some doctors report that it
even increases athletic performance and encourages
weight loss.[5]
Being such an important tool for the metabolism of fatty
acids in every cell, a deficiency of L-Carnitine can be
responsible for a variety of malfunctioning systems in
the body.
As if all of that isn’t
enough of a contribution to the human body, L-Carnitine
can be acetylated into a form called Acetyl-L-Carnitine
(ALC), where it can then cross the blood-brain barrier
and offer neural support. For neurological conditions
such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Down
Syndrome, depression, or memory problems, ALC can be
used to improve nerve damage, therefore increasing
neural performance.[6]
Given to patients who had suffered strokes, ALC
successfully improved cognition and memory.[7]
Due to increased memory and depression problems
with age, ALC is a very helpful supplement in the field
of geriatrics.
The usefulness of ALC,
however, is by no means limited to benefiting the
elderly. Even in children as young as 6 years old who
were diagnosed with ADHD, ALC has proven to reduce
hyperactivity.[8]
In laboratory experiments, adolescent rats given
ALC showed a great reduction in behavioral impulsivity,
a characteristic feature of ADHD.[9]
With the increasing behavioral disorders of today’s
youth, ALC may be a beneficial alternative to dangerous
amphetamine drugs. Atypical levels of carnitine in the
prefrontal cortex of the brain have also been linked to
chronic fatigue syndrome.[10]
Basically, Acetyl-L-Carnitine does for the brain what L-Carnitine
does for the heart: boosts its functions.
For those suffering from
heart disease or other metabolic breakdowns of the body,
L-Carnitine is worth exploring. For those suffering from
memory failure or other cognitive problems, Acetyl-L-Carnitine
may restore the mind you feel you’ve lost. Those taking
ACL will still experience some of the positive effects
of carnitine on the heart and those taking L-Carnitine
should still notice some improvement on mood and memory,
but the form you choose should depend on which
conditions you intend to treat primarily.[11]
The positive effects of carnitine encompass such a large
variety of disease that its deficiency can result in an
aching, degenerating, suffering body. Its replenishment
can make you feel young all over again, repairing
damaged organs and preventing high risk illnesses. In
addition to proper fatty acid metabolism, carnitine
nourishes the body with powerful antioxidants.[12]
By ensuring that your body has an appropriate amount of
L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine, especially in
combination with other vitamins, you can fight the
diseases that creep up on people as they get older and
their metabolisms slow down.
Another
Success Story ―
Spurred Me On To Update Some Pages
In
1984, at age 41, I was diagnosed with a very small (3
mm.) infiltrating ductal breast cancer. It was found by
accident following pathology on a larger area of
fibrocystic tissue that had been removed from the tail
of my breast. I was advised to have a wider area of
tissue removed along with some lymph nodes to determine
if I needed radiation and/or chemotherapy. I refused
this and went to the
Immuno-Technologies Cancer Clinic (its present name)
in Freeport, Bahamas. The treatment I began is called
Immuno-Augmentative Therapy (IAT) as developed by the
clinic's founder,
Lawrence
Burton, PhD. Dr. Burton died in l993, but this very
individualized immune therapy is still available at the
Freeport clinic as of March 2009 when I am writing this.
I remained on IAT for 5 years and then Dr. Burton
suggested that I could go off the therapy as he thought
my immune system was strong enough to keep me healthy on
its own. But within one year of going off the treatment,
I developed another breast cancer which was visible on
the skin at the same location as the first surgery. I
had another limited surgery done (a lumpectomy) and this
revealed five microscopic cancers in the removed tissue
as well as the visible one which was 1.5 cm. I was now
advised to do a mastectomy as well as lymph node removal
and chemotherapy. I again rejected these options and
chose to return to the Freeport clinic. I have remained
on IAT since then. It is now 25 years since I began
taking IAT and I remain in good health with no side
effects from the treatment. I believe that the cancer is
still "in my system" and it is controlled with IAT
treatments. I hope to have this available for the rest
of my life.

Because of this letter, we have updated a few pages here
that you may want to peruse.
Dr
Burton has passed away (we did his bio a short time ago)
and Neil Riordan has taken over his clinic in the
Bahamas. They continue to supply Dr Burton's therapy IAT,
and have added their own that were developed at the
Aidan Clinic in Arizona.
We've
updated our Alternative Cancer Therapies section by
putting IAT and Dr Sam Chachoua's
Induced Remission Therapy. Additionally, we updated our article on
the immune system, since these therapies too fit those
pages.
So,
next month we'll update the second page in the immune
system, but for now, you can check out:
Your Immune System.
Obama ran on the platform of change. His first 100 days,
not quite over yet, have been pretty much about change:
closing Gitmo, funding stem cell research, forming
complete sentences.
We’re told that his administration wants input, and they
have set up a site where you can give em your two cents.
But
still, is real change going to happen or just some minor
changes. Is the FDA still going to run a protection
racket for the wealthy Pharm interests? Are Doctors
going to continue practicing medicine without ever
learning the basis of health? Are we going to keep
poisoning our planet and our people till all our immune
systems are completely compromised?
Our
infrastructure is way overdue for an overhaul. This
should have been done during Reagan’s administration.
One
problem with change is that not all change need be any
good. If we’re going in the wrong direction, and change
direction, is it necessarily the right direction.
Well, let me tell you how simple the answers to this
are.
Your representatives, your senators, even your local
representatives and local state senators all have people
working for them called advisors. It is their advisor’s
jobs to collect information and form policy. There is an
advisor for infrastructure, one for health care, and one
for the environment.
Where do they get their information? FROM YOU!
We
are the government. We the people. It is up to US to
supply our representatives with new ideas to improve our
country.
It
is the job of the government to improve the quality of
life in the US and guarantee our freedoms and our
liberties.
So
far, the last eight years have shown that the government
can improve life only for the top wealthiest people in
the country while destroying the middle class.
Personally, I am in contact with my representatives
weekly. I know many in their offices. And when I send
them something, I make sure at least five to ten others
send them approximately the same thing. Just to show
them we’re serious.
The
President says he wants a cure to cancer.
Dr Sam Chachoua
presented his first paper on cancer at the age of 18.
His theory has been tested and shown to be 85% effective
against cancer. His AIDS therapy has shown to be 99%
effective.
If
they REALLY want to cure cancer, send them the story of
Dr Sam.
Our
infrastructure needs rebuilding and that includes our
sewage and water treatment plants. We KNOW chlorine is
killing us. It causes cancer and cardiovascular illness.
Write your representatives and tell them it’s time to
get rid of chlorine. Send them this article on
UV light, and tell them that in Canada they are
cleaning their water with UV light.
Since the water must then travel miles and miles through
pipelines that could be filled with bacteria, each house
will have to have a UV system built into it to treat the
water that arrives at home. Imagine the number of jobs
this system would create: designing, building,
installing, repairing UV systems to clean up the water
in our homes.
Please. GET INVOLVED. Write your reps. Call them. Send
them articles.
Here is a list of articles that just from this site that
can set real change in motion:

WASHINGTON—Industries from health care to
agribusiness to mining that stand to lose under
President Barack Obama's policy agenda are ramping
up lobbying campaigns to derail or modify his

These are the people who
have, in the past, profited by poisoning our food,

not by our wellness.
Science is the enemy of

could say that Reality is the enemy of the far
right, for as Steven Colbert pointed out, "We all

America. This administration "seems to know" that it

Will the New
HR875 Bill in Congress Outlaw Organic Farming?
The
Wellness Directory is NOT in favor of the bill, but we
also must tell you that it does not ban organic farming.
It’s a one size fits all bill that allows the Feds to
trample all over state’s rights.
The
bill must be changed and that’s where you come in.
We
need food safety. Since the advent of Ronald Reagan
brand Deregulationism, our food safety has declined.
Right after Bush II took office, his administration
further deregulated the food industry resulting in an
outbreak of Lysteria, a food born illness that killed
over seventy people.
Deregulating capitalism is like deregulating football.
It just doesn’t work.
One
of the best films I’ve seen in a long time that has a
minor focus on deregulation is called The World
According to Monsanto. You can see this (and
download it for free) at the
Free Documentary Site.
From the movie: When Monsanto was actively creating new
Frankenfoods, Vice President George H Bush visited. The
bigwigs discussed with Bush the problems of getting
their seeds into circulation, and Bush responded, “Just
come see us. We’re in the dereg business,” and the fast
tracking of untested Frankenfoods is now just a footnote
in history.
Our
food is now being tested by private industry. The
privatization of regulation is one great way to get
around regulations and allow the outbreaks we’re
currently witnessing.
We
need real food safety, but this bill goes
a bit too far, and here are the reasons we at the
Wellness Directory do not support the bill:
First off, the bill is sponsored by Rose DeLauro. Her
husband is a lobbyist for Monsanto. When you read the
guts of the bill, you’ll see a conflict of interest
here. For Ms DeLauro to submit such a bill tainted with
ethical violations should result in her being tossed out
of congress on her ear. We should all be outraged at
this behavior. These people are supposed to represent
our interests, not their own. This sort of behavior has
to be quashed and DeLauro should be made an example to
all other representatives.
This is up to the people in the third district of
Connecticut. If you know someone there, tell them all
about this little problem. Get this woman tossed as far
out of the system as possible.
The
bill itself has a few problems. These are the ones we
see:
1.
The bill requires all food producers to
pre-register. This means that any person or small farmer
who attends a farmer’s market, or who sells his produce
from his farm (pick your own strawberries) must
pre-register.
2.
The FSA (Food Standards Agency) can outsource the
job of sampling and testing foods. Who will get these
contracts? Monsanto, ADM, Dow Chemical, etc. In other
words, they’re putting the fox in charge of the
henhouse.
3.
Each infraction can be fined up to a million
dollars. These funds will be used to look for more
infractions.
4.
The bill points out that there is a growing
population of immune compromised consumers. Thus our
food supply must be controlled.
This bill gives the Feds too much power. States rights
will suffer. The fact that all farmers must pre-register
shows that this bill has gone too far. It’s the local,
community farmer whose food has been protecting us.
Outbreaks of salmonella, lysteria, or e-coli just do not
occur on small farms at the rates they occur on factory
farms. It’s the huge processors who have these problems
too, not the folding table at your local farmers market.
Organic farming has even fewer problems.
Here is the Organic Consumer’s Association’s write-up
concerning this bill:
Tell
Congress to Improve Food Safety by Stopping Factory
Farming
HR
875, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, is a
limited-vision attempt by moderate Democrats and
Republicans to craft food safety legislation to address
the out-of-control filth and contamination that are
inherent in our industrialized, now globalized,
"profit-at-any-cost" food system. This being said, OCA
does not support HR 875 in its present form, given the
fact that, if the bill's regulations were applied in a
one-size-fits-all manner to certified organic and
farm-to-consumer operations, it could have a devastating
impact on small farmers, especially raw milk producers
who are already unfairly targeted by state food-safety
regulators. Although the OCA deems this bill vaguely
well-intentioned, we are calling on Congress to focus
its attention on the real threats to food safety:
globalized food sourcing from nations such as China
where food safety is a travesty and domestic
industrial-scale and factory farms whose collateral
damage includes pesticide and antibiotic-tainted food,
mad cow disease, E. coli contamination and salmonella
poisoning. And, of course, Congress and the Obama
Administration need to support a massive transition to
organic farming practices.
This bill is not about food safety, but rather “food
control.” He who controls our food, controls the people.
It’s that simple.
Number three above echoes the theme of our drug wars: we
make busts to collect money to make more busts. If the
purpose of this bill is food safety, then lets make it
about food safety and not busting little Billy’s
Lemonade Stand.
Yes, we have a population of immune compromised
consumers. They are immune compromised because of the
factory farmed foods laced with chemicals produced by
the companies who will benefit from this bill? Oh
please. This bill must make the FSA an independent and
objective agency. Any favoritism should be punished,
hopefully like China punishes its agencies’ heads who
practice favoritism.
What You Can Do
Contact your senators and representatives (Congressional
Email Directory) and tell them we need food safety.
Thank them for recognizing this. Tell them to leave the
little guy alone, let the states handle the small, local
farmers. Tell them we need to be focusing on huge
factory farms, on safer foods, that the FDA needs
restructuring to eliminate conflicts in interest, and
that Frankenfoods must be tested thoroughly. Tell them
the FSA must remain objective and independent; that
outsourcing the inspections of our foods to huge
corporations is like putting the fox in charge of the
hen house.
Tell them we need food safety, inspected by government
workers who represent the needs of the people.
Write, call, visit them in person. We’ve learned that
grassroots politics works, so let us never forget this.
We are the government. If we don’t do our duties as
citizens, then don’t expect your representatives to do
theirs.
Finally, I'm not sure how much impact this will have,
but here is a petition you might want to sign. As we say
about battling cancer, "Everything works when you do
everything."
The Petition Site.

Did you
know that your brain is going to shrink as you get
older? Conventional medicine says it's just a fact of
life. But your brain doesn't have to shrink — at least
not at the "normal" rate. A recent study has shown that
you can reduce the rate of brain-cell loss by more than
six times. And all you have to do is take one vitamin.
The study looked at 107 volunteers between the ages of
61 and 87 years. None of the participants had any signs
of memory or cognitive impairment. The volunteers
received a physical examination every year along with a
battery of memory and cognition testing. The researchers
collected blood every year and evaluated it for vitamin
B12 status. In addition, they determined the
participants' brain size by an annual MRI scan. The
study ran for five years. Here's what they found:
All of the patients lost some brain mass in the
five-year period. But when the researchers compared the
amount of brain loss to their vitamin B12 levels, an
amazing fact became apparent. The researchers divided
the group into three different groups depending on their
vitamin B12 status. The group whose B12 status was in
the lowest one-third had 6.17 times more brain loss than
those in the upper one-third.
The authors said that lower levels of vitamin B12, even
low levels within the so-called "normal" range, can
cause brain atrophy and memory problems.
This study clearly demonstrates the importance of
maintaining optimal B12 status. The lower your status,
even if it's in the normal range, the faster your brain
will shrink. And notice I said "status," not levels.
There's a difference.
"Status" refers to the level of active B12 in your
blood, not your overall level of B12. Serum (blood) B12
tests can tell you only how much B12 you have. They
can't tell you how much of that B12 is active. In order
to determine your B12 status, you also have to test for
homocysteine (high homocysteine levels are a sign of low
active B12 levels) and methylmalonic acid (also high
when active B12 is low). Both of these are actually more
accurate tests of B12 than the blood tests.
However, there's one other test you have to do as well.
You also have to measure the amount of
holotranscobalamin (holo-TC) in the bloodstream. Vitamin
B12 in the bloodstream is bound to two proteins. One is
called haptocorrin and the other transcobalamin. When it
is bound to transcobalamin the resulting molecule is
holo-TC.
When the standard test for B12 measures your blood
level, it is measuring both the B12 bound to haptocorrin
and holo-TC. But holo-TC is the only form of B12 that is
biologically active. The cells are not able to actively
use the B12 that is bound to haptocorrin. And less than
1/4 of the total amount of B12 in the blood exists as
holo-TC. So when a B12 blood level is measured, only 1/4
of the B12 it is measuring is the active form of the
vitamin. And that's why it can be so misleading.
The authors of this study used all four tests.
Interestingly enough, although the total B12 in the
blood and the holo-TC both showed the increase in brain
atrophy, the MMA and homocysteine levels did not. So I
recommend that just to be sure, when evaluating B12
status, doctors should check all four tests.
If you want to maintain normal brain function throughout
your life, ask your doctor to perform these four tests
for vitamin B12. You may have to find an integrative
physician from ACAM (www.acam.org)
to perform these tests. If your B12 status is low, your
doctor should give you a vitamin B12 injection. You'll
also want to eat plenty of foods with B12. These include
meat and dairy products.
Editor's Note: Those of you who are regulars know
that my favorite B12 is the one made with
Methylcobalamin. As we age, many of us
have issues with
stomach acid, and for B12 to be absorbed in the stomach,
we need stomach acid and a few other factors, thus, to
avoid any problems with absorption, I take a Methyl B-12
Lozenge (1000mcg). Just plop it into your mouth, under
your tongue, and take it up right there.
Additionally, a raw egg yoke in organic grape juice
seems to be as effective as a booster shot of B12.
The boy with 11 tumours who was sent home to
die... and survives after grandparents'
alternative therapy treatments By Daniel Martin
After he developed an aggressive form
of childhood cancer in 2006, Connah
Broom's body came under relentless attack from the
disease.
Eleven tumours spread from his neck to his knees and his
case appeared hopeless.
In 2007, doctors told his family there was nothing more
they could do. They said they should take him home to
enjoy his final months.
But Connah's family refused to give up hope. His
grandparents began treating him with alternative
therapies and, remarkably, he survived.
Latest scans on Connah, now aged seven, show that ten of
his 11 tumours are shrinking, have no blood flow and may
be dead.
The family are preparing for new scans which they hope
will reveal the last tumour is also in retreat.
His grandparents are convinced their treatments,
including a strict organic diet and a daily sauna, are
helping him beat his disease.
But cancer experts are more sceptical, warning that the
tumours could return at any moment.
Last night they cast doubt on whether the alternative
therapies had made any difference.
Connah lives with his father Chris, 27, and his
grandparents Debbie, 53, and Jim, 56, in Gronant, North
Wales.
Debbie Broom said: 'There are times when we've broken
down and thought "Why Connah?" and wanted to lash out at
someone. But we've coped by turning our frustration into
positive energy to help him.'
The family's nightmare began in August 2006 when Connah
was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma at Alder Hey
children's hospital in Liverpool.
Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the nervous system that can
spread round the entire body. Doctors found tumours
stretching from his neck, through his chest near his
heart, in his stomach close to several organs including
the kidney and intestine, and down his left leg.
Grandmother Debbie gives
Connah ultrasound: It is claimed the treatment kills
cancer cells
Mrs Broom said: 'They told us Connah
had 11 tumours which were at the most advanced and
aggressive stage. It was like a bolt out from the blue.
'Connah had been suffering sharp pains in his stomach
now and again for about a year. But our local surgery
could not find anything wrong. We never expected
something like this.' He was put on chemotherapy for seven months, and doctors
considered surgery. But they concluded the cancer was
too widespread and close to vital organs for it to be
successful.
Mrs Broom said: 'A doctor told us to take Connah home
and enjoy our remaining time with him.'
They were given the option of putting Connah on an
experimental drug called Tapotecan – but were told it
could damage his kidneys and heart, meaning he would
have only a 50 per cent chance of surviving the
treatment.
The Brooms decided the risks were too high. Instead,
they turned to alternative therapy.
Connah undergoes light
therapy while his Grandad Jim reads to him: Few studies
have been carried out to show it works and it is not
available in the UK or US
After surfing the internet they
decided on an organic diet and filtering his water,
after reading it would help reduce harmful toxins in his
body.
The results, according to Mrs Broom, were amazing. 'Once
we did this, Connah stopped becoming ill,' she said.
However, experts say levels of toxins in food and drink
are unlikely to be high enough to cause cancer.
The next alternative treatment the Brooms deployed was
reiki. The family had set up a website for the 'Connah
Appeal' and among those who sent messages of support was
a man who described himself as a reiki healer.
It is claimed that this Japanese healing works by
focusing electromagnetic energy at the frequency needed
to destroy cancer cells. However, no trials have shown
it can reduce tumours, although in some people it can
help reduce stress and pain.
Connah has his daily
sauna: It is believed dangerous toxins are sweated out
but experts say the body can detoxify itself naturally
The healer now carries out weekly
sessions at the Broom family home. Connah's retired
grandfather went back to work for an oil company to help
his son, a chef, raise money.
They also sold some property to raise funds. The
thousands raised have largely been spent on trips to
Poland to have scans not available on the NHS.
They also went to a cancer clinic in Mexico which offers
a sound and light therapy not available in the UK or
even the U.S.
Sono Photo-Dynamic Therapy is a controversial technique,
which is rejected by mainstream medical science. It
involves Connah swallowing a capsule containing algae.
He is then placed under light of a certain wavelength,
which apparently 'activates' the algae to create a
powerful oxidant which can kill the cancer.
After visiting Mexico, they rebuilt the equipment at
home and now repeat the technique every night.
Mrs Broom also uses an ultrasound machine she got in
Mexico to rub over the affected areas after she was told
this would also help.
This is followed by laser therapy, which is meant to act
like a low dose of radiotherapy.
Debbie gives Connah laser
treatment: It is believed the laser traces the skin
round the tumour areas to act like a low dose of
radiotherapy
Then Connah has a sauna, to 'sweat
out' the toxins. The entire procedure takes two and a
half hours.
Mrs Broom said: 'We're not under any illusions and we
know that all this could change at any time. Each day is
like the turn of a card. You don't know what hand you're
going to be dealt.
'The Power Above has been watching over Connah and we
just pray every day that his good health will continue
and he will keep getting better. We can't pinpoint
exactly which part of what we are doing is making Connah
so well, so we'll just keep doing it all.
'If what we're doing stops working, then we'll look for
another treatment. We'll never give up doing everything
in the world to help our little boy.'
But experts are sceptical that the alternative therapies
have had much effect. They say cancers often go into
remission for unexplained reasons – and can come back.
Dr Julie Sharp, of Cancer Research UK, said: 'Two thirds
of children with neuroblastoma can be successfully
treated but unfortunately some types of the disease are
more difficult to treat.
'Some parents of children that don't respond well to
treatment decide to seek alternative therapies and often
these are still in an experimental stage.
'It's important to remember that all proven treatments
for neuroblastoma are available in this country and that
the standard treatment here is equal to anywhere else in
the world.'
Connah's GP Dr Eamon Jessop said: 'The thing with this
cancer is that it can suddenly flare up again and when
it comes back, it can come back rapidly.
'The family are aware of this and, if it does happen, we
will have to look again at whether traditional medical
treatments should be considered.'
But he added: 'When it was decided two years ago that
his tumours were inoperable, we would have expected just
a short time before he became very ill.
'But sometimes unexplainable things happen that we have
to call a miracle. The excellent care given to Connah by
his grandparents can only have helped him. They really
are amazing people.'
Buying and Using
CoQ10 Not all brands are
absorbed properly.
Research in animals suggests that only a small
amount of CoQ10 in its pure form is actually
absorbed, although it can still significantly
increase CoQ10 blood levels. CoQ10, especially the
dry dosage form (tablet or capsule), may be best
absorbed when fats or oils are present in the
gastrointestinal tract, such as during a meal.
Softgels may improve absorption as may the addition
of an oil as an ingredient (as with the ingredient
sold as“CoQsol”). Even greater absorption may be
achieved with CoQ10 that has been solubilized (sold
as “Q-Gel”) or formulated as water-soluble beadlets
(sold as “All-Q”). Bioavailability tests in people
with softgels containing Q-Gel, for example, showed
that it achieved CoQ10 blood levels more than twice
that of softgels containing CoQ10 in oil, capsules
containing CoQ10 powder, or tablets made with CoQ10
powder. Another human bioavailability test showed
All-Q to be nearly equal to Q-Gel but both to be
superior to Q-Sorb (which is not a solubilized
formula). CoQ10 in a cyclodextrin complex (sold as
“Chew-Q” and “Hydro-Q-Sorb”) or in a liposomal
solution (sold as “Li-Q-Sorb”) have also been
associated with increased absorption in laboratory
models.
CoQ10 found in most
supplements is in the oxidized state (ubiquinone),
but once in the body it readily goes into the
reduced state (ubiquinol), which is its active,
anti-oxidant form. Ubiquinol predominates in
body. You can purchase supplements in which CoQ10 is
already in the active ubiquinol state. Ubiquinol is
sometimes referred to as CoQH-10 or CoQH2-10 and is
marketed by a major supplier as “QH.” Research is
not clear that it provides an advantage. Ubiquinol
is also sold by one company in solubilized and
stabilized forms as “Q-Nol,” “Li-Q-Nol,” and “Quinogel.”
Naturally formed CoQ10 is 100% in the "trans" isomer
form. Synthetically formed material is also
predominantly in the "trans" form with a small
amount in the "cis" form. Since the fermentation
process using bacteria or yeast is much cheaper than
chemical synthesis and provides 100% natural (trans)
CoQ10, most, but not all, CoQ10 found in the
marketplace today is made by a fermentation process.
CoQ10, as we mentioned in the past, is
made by the liver. However, statin drugs actually stop
the creation of CoQ10 and early literature on statins
told doctors to also prescribe CoQ10 along with statins.
None of my readers taking statins have written to me
that their doctors prescribed CoQ10, and all who wrote
to me said that their doctor never even brought it up.
One reader told us he even questioned his doctor on this
and his doctor had no knowledge of CoQ10 and statins,
showing that the doctor had not read the literature on
the drugs he was prescribing.
There is a wafer form from NOW Foods that
I've taken, but with meals that have oil, since, as
stated above, CoQ10 is an oil soluble nutrient. It comes
with natural vitamin E and soy lecithin.
And then you have Solanova's brand of
CoQ10, the Rolls Royce of CoQ10 that has been clinically
tested and proven to be the most readily absorbed from
available.
Super QNol® CoQ10 100 mg - $ 46.95 First ever water-soluble Ubiquinol CoQ10 offering unparalleled absorption. This Coenzyme Q10 supplement is a powerful antioxidant compound that infuses cells with energy and protects them from oxidative stress and damage. *
It's not nice to be
called a liar, especially if you're working hard to
uncover the truth (when you could be out fishing!).
A reader wrote to me
that he want to Consumer Labs and searched for the
results of the probiotic study I'd quoted in my article
on probiotics, and touted Sedona Labs' products as
standing head and shoulders above all other brands.
He said that Sedona
Labs was not even mentioned in the study. That I had
probably been paid off by Sedona Labs, and that he'd
never again read another article at my site because
obviously I was a liar and on the take.
Ouch.
I went back to the
Consumer Labs site and sought for the term "Sedona Labs"
and sure enough, nothing came up. Then I realized that
the products I've been reviewing came from two different
companies. Sedona Labs was created to market their
products through the web, while Flora Source is the name
of the company marketing through retail stores. Same
products, different company names.
And sure enough, the
Flora Source products in the study stood head and
shoulders over the others.
However, and here's
the bad news, the latest study published at Consumer
Labs has panned the Flora Source product. Why? The
product did NOT contain the number of bacteria shown on
the label.
This, actually, is a
marketing problem, not a quality control problem.
You see, the bottles
are marked with the number of bacteria per capsule "at
the time of manufacture." With time, that number starts
to go down. These are live creatures. With heat, light,
and time, they'll start to die.
One problem with
Consumer Labs is that they did NOT publish the amounts
that the Flora Source products DID contain during the
tests. I had to call, sit on hold for 10 minutes, find
the right person, sit on hold for 5 more minutes before
I found out that the number they did find STILL stood
head and shoulders above all the other products. Sheesh.
So, first of all, I
recommend you all join
Consumer
Labs. Since the government does not test or regulate
supplements (and we believe it should be kept that way
to keep the gov't off our supplements) we do need to
police the industry. Buyer Beware! Learn all you can.

Things We Didn't Know About Food
How the authors of the new Rough
Guide to Food lost their appetites for the food
industry.
by George Miller and Katharine Reeve
A surprise consequence of writing a book about food was
that we lost our appetite. A month in, we realised [the
author is British....they spell things differently] we
had underestimated just how devastating the effects of
our industrial food systems are on our health, animal
welfare, climate change and the earth's resources.
Thankfully, a few trips to some farmers markets with
their good news story of artisan baking, handmade
cheeses and fresh-from-the-ground veg offered the
escapism we needed and helped provide a sense of
perspective.
Food, lies and red tape
Overwhelmingly we found that most of us simply don't
know much about food, having grown up knowing only
supermarkets. In our confusion we are at the mercy of
food manufacturers' aggressive marketing campaigns,
especially for highly profitable "healthy" foods.
The Food Standards Agency and the EU are now challenging
manufacturers' health claims. Yakult, we discovered, is
essentially overpriced sweetened water with added
bacteria marketed as a probiotic health drink (check the
label: we naively assumed it was diluted live yoghurt!).
Why spend your money on foods that are not all they're
cracked up to be? Become a label checker and edit your
shopping list: a good rule of thumb is the fewer and
simpler the ingredients the better.
Ducks
We knew animals had a pretty bad time in order to
provide us with ever cheaper meat; but we were shocked
that their lives were literally not worth living.
Despite our national attachment to Jemima Puddleduck, 98
per cent of the duck we eat comes from mass-produced,
often mutilated animals which are packed into vast sheds
and only see the light of day on their way to the
slaughterhouse. Ducks have nowhere to swim.
Beware of misleading labels implying "freedom"; only the
Soil Association accreditation offers any real guarantee
of a decent standard of animal care. Top supermarkets
for animal welfare are Waitrose and M&S - see
Compassion
in World Farming's annual welfare league tables.
Food giants
We set out believing supermarkets were where power was
concentrated in the food system, so it was a surprise to
learn about the handful of mega-powerful transnational
corporations which control most of the links in the food
chain. Giant among giants is Cargill, whose $120bn
turnover in 2008 was bigger than the GDP of two-thirds
of the world's nations. Cargill controls almost half of
all the world's grain trade and has, in the words of one
commentator, "its tentacles in every aspect of the
global food system" from meat and sugar to animal feed
and fertiliser. This is worrying because it gives them
incredible power over what we eat and our future food
supplies.
Bitter chocolate
The extent of child labour in the cocoa industry came as
a shock. It's especially prevalent in the world's
leading producers in West Africa. Cte d'Ivoire, the
biggest grower, has more than 100,000 child workers
often enduring slave labour conditions involving the use
of dangerous pesticides and machetes. There's also
cross-border child trafficking. The multi-billion-pound
"Big Chocolate" industry hasn't shown much interest in
cleaning up its supply chain. Another good reason to
choose Fairtrade.
Industry insiders
Reading The Grocer magazine regularly has been a bit
like eavesdropping on the food industry's private
conversation. It was eye-opening to witness its
determination to flog us syrupy drinks and salty snacks
backed by seven-figure marketing campaigns. A cynic
might quickly form the view that the industry's ideal
consumer never cooks, never reads the back of a packet
and instead relies on it big processors' corn, soya and
sugar alchemy to cater for all their "meal and snack
occasion" needs.
Our daily bread
As a nation we munch our way through 11 billion
sandwiches a year (that's 200 each). But popularity is
no guarantee of quality. Glance at most bread wrappers
and you'll find a gruesome list of emulsifiers,
preservatives, sweeteners and fats. These ingredients
make for depressing spongy loaves with long shelf lives,
even if they've got fancy French or Italian labels. One
of the greatest pleasures of writing the book was
discovering artisanal bakers who achieve miracles with
nothing more mysterious than good flour, water and yeast
- plus skill.
Fairtrade
Before writing this book our engagement with Fairtrade
food was pretty half-hearted: a tendency to Divine
chocolate and easily available bananas. Harriet Lamb,
Director of the Fairtrade Foundation changed all that.
She encouraged us to avoid out-of-season, air freighted
green beans arguing that in comparison with the Kenyan
bean farmer, who creates about 0.9 tonnes CO2 emissions
per annum, our carbon footprint (at an average of 9.8
tonnes p.a.) was through the roof and that the free
healthcare and education we take for granted has to be
paid for in Kenya. Soberingly, it is the developed
world's predilection for meat and dairy products which
accounts for half the carbon emissions associated with
food.
Plenty more fish in the sea?
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates
that half of the world's fish stocks are already being
exploited to the hilt and a further quarter are now
fished beyond maximum sustainable levels. But fish are
tricky to monitor. Sustainability can depend on where
and how a fish was caught as well as its species. Enough
to induce paralysis at the fish counter. Fortunately,
the Marine Stewardship Council's certification scheme
takes into account the full environmental impact of
fishing. Look for their "tick-mark" logo on the fish, or
even better, ask your fishmonger if you are lucky enough
to still have one.
Fat futures
The UK has the highest obesity levels in Europe with
more than 60 per cent of us now officially overweight or
obese. But obesity is rather euphemistic, isn't it? What
we're really talking about is people consuming far too
much overprocessed foods and soft drinks: we can't find
the "off" switch. Thirty years of artificial sweeteners
have not helped; in fact they're part of the problem,
creating ever-sweeter foods and encouraging cravings.
It's not just airline seats and hospital beds that are
feeling the strain; health service budgets are
threatened by the costs of a heavier and sicker nation
as a result of obesity.
The upside of the credit crunch
The food landscape changed dramatically while writing
this book: organic purchasing levelled out after high
year-on-year increases; many are finding Farmers'
Markets and vegetable box schemes such as Riverford's
are cheaper ways of shopping and less stressful too;
growing your own and cooking from scratch increasingly
look like good ways to save money and rediscover the
pleasures of food.
We've recently received two emails concerning selenium.
One repeated something we'd mentioned in an earlier
newsletter, that two Brazil nuts supply all the selenium
you need for a day. However, the next email we got
reported that studies showed that human uptake of
selenium isn’t all that good. That we can eat six brazil
nuts and not get enough selenium.
Then the reader went on to inform me about another form
of selenium we’d never heard of. We’d touted our
favorite form, L-selenomethionine in an earlier
newsletter, but the reader told us of an even better
form, methyselenocysteine.
Needless to add, we started researching these things and
found some interesting information.
Selenomethionine was the most efficient form of selenium
at increasing selenium tissue levels (as well as
glutathione peroxidase activity), but had no anticancer
activity. The inorganic form of selenium, sodium
selenite, was quite effective at fighting cancer. This
is where methyselenocysteine comes in. It’s an organic
form of selenium found in leeks, garlic, and onions,
which has been found to be highly toxic to cancer cells,
and rather than infecting cancer cells, causes cancer
cells to self-destruct through apoptosis (cell death)
which does not provoke inflammation (as opposed to the
necrosis caused by the inorganic form of selenium).
Selenium is incorporated into proteins which make
selenoproteins, important antioxidant enzymes while
regulating thyroid function, boosting the immune system,
repairing DNA damage, and detoxicating heavy metals.
We’ve learned that high doses of vitamin C can reduce
the absorption of selenium, thus you should take
selenium one hour before taking vitamin C or 20 minutes
after.
Recommended doses of methylselenocysteine are 200 – 400
mcg for cancer prevention, and 900 to 2, 000 mcg as part
of a comprehensive cancer treatment protocol.
Beware of drug interactions, so check with your
pharmacist or physician before taking large doses of
selenium.
The
Internet is a gold mine of information, its booming
success allowing for the first truly free press the
world has seen. Its open accessibility to everyone,
however, means that researchers must weed through scores
of urban legends and gibberish to uncover the facts.
Unfortunately, bogus “home remedies” leak on websites or
circulate through e-mails and when their artificiality
surfaces, even the world of proven holistic medicine
loses its validity through association. It is important
to differentiate the phony myths from the valuable
facts, for the sake of those with a thirst for truth
concerning holistic remedies and self healing.
A list of 18 remedies has been making its
rounds around the Internet, both as an e-mail and on
various websites. The title of the list varies from such
simple headings as “Home Remedies” to more heartfelt
ones like “Grandma’s Cures.” Some of the information is
outright wrong while some has elements of truth, even if
a bit misleading. No references are included. It would
be interesting to track the original source of this
list, as many of the remedies very suspiciously involve
specific products. In a marketing world where product
placement is frequently found in television media,
music, and the Internet, it isn’t unreasonable to
question the emergence of a widely distributed article
that explicitly mentions certain companies. Not only are
products mentioned (and their names underlined), but
they are also pictured colorfully next to the remedy
descriptions. The facts that the article’s author is
anonymous and no sources are cited should be enough to
stir up skepticism. The original article will be posted
below and the remedies will then be discussed one by
one.

“Eliminate

oil in your cat's ear...Massage it in, then clean with a
cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes
the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates
healing.”
The use of vegetable oils on parasites
very well may drown a few of the pests, but ensuring
total elimination cannot possibly be guaranteed. Wesson
corn oil should not be singled out, as all corn oil
should function similarly. This remedy is listed as a 3
day process, but an ear mite egg does not hatch for up
to 4 days.[1]
Even if it worked in smothering all of the mites, the
newly hatched eggs would continue the infestation.
Occasionally, ear mites can penetrate the ear drum and
go deeper into the ear[2]
where corn oil should definitely not be poured due to
health risks on the animal. Corn oil is a
polyunsaturated fat,[3]
a trans fat that is not healthy for consumption. It is
curious that not only corn oil is specified in this
treatment, but the brand Wesson. The use of oil to
smother parasites (from ear mites to lice) can be found
in old remedy books, but all vegetable oils are included
and product names are certainly not mentioned. Because
of the life cycle of the mite egg, the use of oil on pet
ears may just cause unnecessary build-up or skin
irritation if the pet has a corn allergy.[4]
“Kills
fleas instantly... Dawn dishwashing liquid does the
trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo
the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin
irritations. Good-bye fleas.”
Similarly to
the corn oil, it would not be surprising if Dawn
dishwashing detergent succeeded in smothering a few
adult fleas, but would it be able to also kill the eggs,
which sometimes take up to two weeks to hatch?[5]
Additionally, the chemical components of the soap may be
harsh, especially on animals with sensitive skin. The
process of getting rid of fleas is a much bigger job
than a quick shampoo (or dishwashing detergent) bath, as
larvae and eggs are often infesting the environment the
animal lives in and can be found in bedding, carpet, and
furniture.[6]
Cleaning the environment is essential and if it’s not
done, pets will most likely be infested again in short
order. Shampoos lathered directly on beloved pets should
be made with natural ingredients, as any harsh chemicals
can be absorbed through the skin.
“Rainy day
cure for dog odor. Next time your dog comes in from the
rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any
dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime
fresh.”
According to
the Material Safety Data Sheet on Bounce dryer sheets
from The Proctor & Gamble Company, there are both acute
and chronic health hazards for Bounce dryer sheets that
may result from skin contact.[7]
Not only can prolonged skin and eye contact produce
unwanted irritations, but “oral ingestion may result in
mild gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting,
or diarrhea.”[8]
Considering the tendencies pets have to groom
themselves, it should be assumed that they may ingest
any chemicals used on their bodies. In fact, right off
of the box of Bounce dryer sheets, a warning reads,
“Keep out of reach of toddlers and pets to avoid
accidental ingestion.”[9]
The perfume used for scent can promote topical and nasal
allergies. Bounce dryer sheets also have a slight
flammability rating,[10]
which is a dangerous trade-off for a dog that smells
‘springtime fresh.’ It is probably best to stick with
the advice on the box and keep this product as far away
from pets as possible.
“Did You
Know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve
headache pain almost immediately without the unpleasant
side effects caused by traditional 'pain relievers.'”
What this
claim is referring to is Gatorade’s ability to assist a
dehydrated body, which reveals itself with many symptoms
including headaches.[11]
Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of
dehydration. Gatorade helps to hydrate a thirsty body
due to its water content and to replenish electrolytes
with its salt content, but the same desired result can
be achieved with water and a salty snack. In fact, in
the case of dehydration, there is no better remedy than
water itself.[12]
Gatorade contains harmful ingredients such as processed
sugars (sucrose syrup and glucose-fructose syrup),
artificial flavors, and artificial colors (such as
yellow 5).[13]
For ideal health, artificial additives and colors should
be avoided. Headaches caused by dehydration can be cured
safely by drinking distilled water as opposed to
Gatorade, which cures dehydration but with unnecessary
artificial additives. Furthermore, headaches caused by
other factors (medication, chemicals, lack of sleep,
lack of nutrition, stress, head injuries, hormonal
changes, television, smoking, allergies, etc.[14])
are unlikely to be affected by Gatorade. Dehydration is
likely to be the main cause for most headaches, but for
those that arise because of something else, the source
of the problem must be addressed to relieve symptoms.
“ Did you
know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve
for burns.”
According to Dr. Baumann, the myth that
toothpaste (not Colgate specifically) can decrease
inflammation on the skin goes back to times when
toothpaste regularly contained zinc.[15]
Zinc assists in the healing process of wounded skin[16]
and is actually found in most diaper rash creams. Since
zinc is no longer a main ingredient of toothpaste, the
claim that Colgate can work as a salve for burns is
outdated and no longer true. On top of that, fluoride is
added to toothpaste and this chemical is a proven
irritant which can damage tooth enamel permanently in a
condition known as dental fluorosis.[17]
Fluoride should not be used even on teeth, and
definitely not directly on injured skin. Rather than
treating burnt skin with harsh chemicals, it would be
better to run cool water over the burn and use an aloe
vera cream throughout the healing process.
Before you
head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled
with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of
curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up
your stuffed nose.
Peppermint
can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes
including clearing a stuffy nose[18],
but why go for the Altoid brand which is laden with
artificial flavors and processed sugars[19]
when you can go straight for the pure peppermint
extract, which won’t harm your health in other ways? As
with several of these claims, the actual ingredient that
can be used medicinally is not mentioned, but a product
that includes that ingredient is (and it always also
includes several other unwanted ingredients). Before you
head to a drugstore for a box of Altoids filled with
unnecessary additives, why not consider buying the pure
essential peppermint oil itself? It would be a
worthwhile addition to any medicine cabinet, as its uses
go even beyond treating nasal congestion. Peppermint
aides in digestion, muscle relaxation, circulation,
stress relief, and as a stimulating air freshener.[20]
It is also more effective in its natural form than it
would be after being processed into a breath mint.
Stuffy noses can also be cleared with nasal salines
(homemade with distilled water and sea salt), spicy
food, and humidifiers.[21]
Achy
muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of
horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit
for 30 minutes, then apply it as massage oil, for
instant relief for aching muscles.
There are not very many remedies on this
list that have absolutely no mention of a product, but
this is one of them. Ironically enough, it is also one
of the only ones that may be worth trying at home. The
healing properties of both horseradish and extra virgin
olive oil are so extensive, that it is reasonable to
believe that the combination would assist in aching
muscles. Because of olive oil’s soothing effects on the
skin, it has long been combined with other herbs such as
chamomile as a healing soak. Researchers have identified
a compound in extra virgin olive oil called oleocanthal,
which has anti-inflammatory properties.[22]
Its effect on pain is similar to ibuprofen, but on a
smaller scale. Unlike ibuprofen, extra virgin olive oil
contains no questionable chemicals and its long term use
supports overall health. Horseradish used topically
increases circulation to the area where it’s applied and
can help lessen joint and muscle pains.[23]
When taken orally, its medicinal uses cover digestive
problems, respiratory problems, and rheumatism.[24]
A combination of extra virgin olive oil and horseradish
can be a soothing remedy, especially if used routinely
on aching muscles. If results are not immediate enough,
a hot bath with Epsom salts may offer relief. Topical
application of castor oil also alleviates muscles aches.[25]
Sore
throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of
honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar
kills the bacteria.
Although this doesn’t mention the name of
a product, it does quite suspiciously include a picture
of the brand Aunt Sue’s Honey. Perhaps this was done
intentionally. Whatever the case, raw honey in general
(and not a specific brand) has been long used as a
treatment for sore throats.[26]
Because of the antioxidants found in raw honey, its use
can alleviate the symptoms of an inflamed throat. Its
popularity has gone beyond the realm of holistic health
and its use has even made it to mainstream cough drops
(similarly to how peppermint found its way into Altoids).
Apple cider vinegar has also been found to have healing
effects and the combination of apple cider vinegar with
honey is a powerful elixir for health that has been
passed down for many generations.[27]
Because many of the health ailments people face are
rooted in the acidic environment of their bodies, the
combination of these two alkalizing cures can help with
everything from arthritis to high blood pressure by
neutralizing body acid.[28]
By bringing the body’s pH level to a more alkaline
state, the growth of diseases (many of which thrive on
acidity) is discouraged.[29]
The potion is also beneficial for detoxification and
fighting bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Because it
attacks the virus that causes the sore throat, it aims
to cure the source rather than just the symptom
(although the honey also soothes the symptoms). For
optimal results buy unpasteurized, organic apple cider
vinegar and raw organic honey. Dilute the mixture with
water to avoid teeth enamel erosion.[30]
Cure
urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just
dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at
the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins
eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly--
even though the product has never been advertised for
this use.
Alka-Seltzer is mainly made up of aspirin
and baking soda.[31]
Aspirin has been linked with increased risk of cancers,
stomach ulcers, and kidney damage.[32]
Alka-Seltzer is such a powerful drug that its use is not
at all recommended for children because it has been
linked to a fatal disease called Reye’s Disease, which
causes the failure of multiple organs (this is also true
of aspirin).
[33] The other ingredient of Alka-Seltzer, baking
soda has been used holistically to neutralize urinary
tract infections by raising the pH of acidic urine.[34]
Why pollute your body with the harmful aspirin found in
Alka-Seltzer when it is actually the baking soda that’s
doing the trick? The apple cider vinegar and raw honey
concoction mentioned above would also serve the same
function if used for this problem. Cranberry juice is
antibacterial and because a urinary tract infection is
caused by bacteria, drinking plenty of cranberry juice
is one of the best cures for clearing the infection.
Supplementing with probiotics would also assist your
body’s defense against harmful bacteria.
Honey
remedy for skin blemishes. Cover the blemish with a dab
of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the
bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing.
Works overnight.
Raw honey indeed works wonders on the
skin and can open pores and serve as an antibacterial
cleanse for damaged skin.[35]
The healing properties of raw honey are widely studied
and acknowledged as fact. It’s interesting that in this
list of remedies, the product “Band-Aid” is not only
mentioned, but underlined and pictured. The use of a
bandage is not necessary to elicit the wonders of honey,
and the use of Band-Aid brand specifically definitely
should merit no place on a list of “Grandma’s Cures.”
Acne is caused by clogged pores,[36]
so rather than covering up blemishes with smothering
bandages, it would be much more sensible to keep them
clean and oxygenated. Rather than covering up the
blemish with a bandage, it would be more effective to
leave the honey on as a face mask for 30 minutes and
then rinse it off.
Listerine
therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail
fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The
powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy
again.
In fact,
Listerine has a very strong antifungal property, but it
is unfortunately combined with harsh chemicals and
alcohol, making it a hazard to the body. A toxic
by-product of alcohol called acetaldehyde is suspected
to be a carcinogen which can build up in the mouth,
leading to oral cancers.[37]
Listerine and all alcoholic mouthwashes are therefore
unsafe for people conscientious of the accumulation of
carcinogens in their bodies. Fortunately, one of the
primary fungicides in Listerine comes from a natural
antiseptic called thymol which can also be found in oil
of oregano.[38]
Another natural antiseptic commonly used for toenail
fungus is tea tree oil.[39]
These topical applications can be combined with
antifungal foods taken orally like garlic, to fight the
problem from the inside as well. By seeking natural
fungicides, the unwanted growths can be removed safely
without the erosive and carcinogenic effects of a
Listerine soak. All products with carcinogens should be
avoided, even if the use is temporary, because chemicals
build up and stagnate in the body over time.
Easy
eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in
eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of
Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of
the screws before tightening them.
Due to the adhesive effect of nail
polish, it is reasonable to assume that a drop used on a
small screw could help dry the piece in place.[40]
It is not clear why in this massively produced list of
remedies, the brand Maybelline Crystal Clear is
specified for use, as the hardening effect of nail
polish can certainly be found in a variety of brands.
Cleaning
liquid that doubles as bug killer .. If menacing bees,
wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and
you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula
409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
Formula
409 contains ethylene oxide, which is a suspected
carcinogen for humans and a verified carcinogen for
animals.[41]
Of course it would kill insects; it is a poison across
the animal kingdom! In houses of people who have pets or
of people who are concerned about the chemicals to which
they expose their families, Formula 409 is highly
discouraged for use in any way. It is not a product that
should even be kept in the house, especially when there
are natural household cleaners like vinegar, baking
soda, and lemon juice.[42]
The chemicals in household cleaners can be inhaled and
act as respiratory allergens, increasing the risk of
bronchial ailments like asthma in both children and
adults. The fact that ethylene oxide is a confirmed
carcinogen for animals means that the use of Formula 409
is unsafe around cats, dogs, birds and most likely even
humans. Most insecticides also contain an array of
poisons and dangerous chemicals. The best solution to
this problem would be to guide the insect out the door
or window and avoid unnecessary killing all together.
Smart
splinter remover. Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All
over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off
the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
This is a clever trick for removing a
splinter, but once again, why Elmer’s Glue? According to
the Material Safety Data Sheet for Elmer’s Glue-All, it
can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs (if inhaled).[43]
Even though the risk is slight, exposure to all
chemicals should be kept as minimal as possible. Would
this technique work? If wood glue specifically is used
and enough of the splinter is exposed, it very well may
create a strong enough adhesion to pull it out.[44]
If the splinter is too deep inside the skin, however,
the glue may not be able to stick to enough of the wood
to grab a hold of it. Only if enough of the splinter is
exposed will the glue adhere, but if enough of it is
exposed, it might as well be tweezed. If the splinter is
too deep in the skin, thin layers of skin will need to
be peeled by a needle or other pointed object in order
to pull the splinter out with a pair of tweezers.
Hunt's
tomato paste boil cure. Cover the boil with Hunt's
tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes
soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
To treat
boils, a daily moist heat compress may hasten the
healing process while garlic and onion juice may help
draw it to a head.[45]
Like garlic and onions, tomatoes are acidic and would
also encourage the healing process. Tomato paste is rich
in lycopene, which contains vitamin A and vitamin C,
both of which assist in healing damaged skin.[46]
As is important to note in almost every one of these
remedies, the brand Hunt’s Tomato Paste does not hold
any special powers that aren’t offered by all tomatoes.
Because boils are caused by a bacterium called
Staphylococcus aureus,[47],
it would be helpful to eat garlic and take probiotics to
fight the infection from the inside out. Castor oil has
also been known to draw out infection and detoxify the
body. A daily heat compress over castor oil will help
draw out the pus.
Balm for
broken blisters... To disinfect a broken blister, dab on
a few drops of Listerine a powerful antiseptic.
As mentioned
before, the use of mouthwash has been linked with oral
cancers and tooth erosion.[48]
While it may work as an antiseptic for cold sores and
other broken blisters, it disrupts the pH balance of
your mouth. Applied on broken skin, its alcohol content
might cause burning. According to a study from the
Southern California University of Health Sciences, an
amino acid called lysine has proven to reduce cold sores
(blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus).
[49] Topical ointments of lysine would be much more
agreeable to sensitive skin than the burning alcohol in
Listerine, and without the carcinogenic build-up.
Vinegar to
heal bruises ... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and
apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces
the blueness and speeds up the healing process
This is only the second remedy on the
list that makes absolutely no mention of a specific
brand. It, too, is worth trying at home. Vinegar is
among the oldest of home remedy alternatives and has
been used for a variety of purposes. Apple cider vinegar
is especially useful with its rich vitamin and mineral
content, but white vinegar also has its medicinal uses
(and is easier on the skin).
[50] White vinegar can treat skin abrasions, insect
bites, burns, and itchy skin.[51]
It is also proven to help with blood stagnation, a
condition which is present when the skin is bruised.[52]
Quaker
Oats for fast pain relief. It's not for breakfast any
more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a
bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool
slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for
soothing relief from arthritis pain.
Once again,
it is peculiar that this list specifies the brand Quaker
Oats as a remedy instead of discussing the oats
themselves. The health benefits of including oats in
your diet are abundant. Topical application has been
cited for everything from beauty tips to itch relief.
Oats contain manganese, a chemical that has been
associated with relief of arthritis pain.[53]
Direct soaks are an excellent way to absorb nutrients
through the pores of the skin. For body aches or
all-over itching, hot oatmeal baths are an excellent and
calming activity that can produce desirable results. It
isn’t even necessary to use a specific brand! Concerning
microwaving oats in a bowl for one minute, a better plan
would be to avoid irradiating your food at all.
Microwaves damage nutrients with their strong electric
field,[54]
rendering the healing effects of oatmeal useless and
risking negative health effects. It would be better to
heat water for oats on a stove than it would be to use a
microwave.
* * *
While this
list does indeed contain a few kernels of wisdom, it
also contains several half-truths, or truths that don’t
quite take the bigger picture into consideration. Rather
than crediting specific ingredients that heal, it leads
readers to specific products that contain those
ingredients (water and electrolytes in Gatorade,
peppermint in Altoids, baking soda in Alka Seltzer, oats
in Quaker Oats, etc.). Furthermore, it includes some
remedies that have incomplete information (Wesson Corn
Oil for mites, Dawn for fleas, Colgate for burns) and
others that are potentially hazardous (Bounce on
stinking pets, Listerine for toenail fungus and
blisters, Formula 409 for insects). Instead of calling
for fingernail polish or glue, it goes out of the way to
mention Maybelline or Elmer’s Glue. There are
unnecessary mentions of brands throughout the list (like
Aunt Sue’s and Band-Aid for raw honey cures). In fact,
the entire article reads like a giant advertisement.
There are
home remedies everywhere you look on the Internet, some
valid and others complete fabrications. Of course there
are tried products that combine a healing cocktail of
ingredients, but unless those ingredients are explained,
there’s reason to be suspicious. Without first
researching products for the chemicals and additives
they contain, there is no reason to believe that they
are beneficial. As there are many claims of home
remedies on the Internet, it is important for readers to
do their own research and be skeptical of information
that does not include cited sources.
Scanty
nourishment and the permanent lack of microelements and
vitamins made people of the Bubal tribe ask their only
wealth - cows - for help. The tribers learned that
eating the menstrual matter of cows helps them fight
such diseases as rachitis, scurvy and leukemia.
The mysterious tribe and their cows roam on the border
between Kenya and Somalia. This is the only nation in
the world, which practices a very unusual tradition:
their children eat cows' menstrual matter until they get
married. The Bubals believe that the licking of cow's
vagina makes would-be warriors strong and courageous.
Italian scientists have recently discovered that the
menstrual matter of cows is a source of such vitamins as
B6, B12, E and D. In addition, it makes up the
deficiency of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and
potassium. That is why, scientists think, cows protect
the tribe from the most horrible disease of the region -
anemia (the lack of haemoglobin). The most interesting
thing happens afterwards, though. Hormone changes become
extremely conspicuous with all males of the African
tribe, after they reach puberty: their testicles grow up
to 70-80 centimeters in diameter. The "miracle of
nature" happens on account of the untraditional
nourishment that tribal individuals practice in their
adolescence. The hormone-rich menstrual secretion of the
cattle causes irreversible hormone changes with humans.
It is noteworthy, that such giant testicles do not exert
any negative influence on the reproductive function,
although they do cause many other obvious problems.
Tourists from all over the world are ready to pay huge
money to take a look at giant testicles. Tourists' money
help the tribal nation improve the quality of their
meals. It is not ruled out that the next generation of
Bubals will have nothing to boast with.
Express Gazeta
We got a number of
letters from our last newsletter’s leading
Tidbits stories on “Tax Here, Tax Now” and
Stiglitz’s paper on how the empire collapsed.
Most letters were in
support of the articles, one asked to be taken off
our mailing list, and a handful echoed the same
sentiment: “I
hate paying my hard earned money to some scum who
doesn’t want to work.”
I too can understand
this sentiment, so I thought I’d do a little
research and find out exactly how much of the
average taxpayer’s taxes go to paying “scum who
refuse to work.”
The figures I have
here come from the Office of Management and Budget.
Let’s say you are an
average family of 4 making $50,000.00. Your federal
taxes, as of last year, were $6,225.00. Of that
$465.00 went to welfare.
What exactly does
welfare cover? Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps,
veterans’ pensions, health care for children, child
care entitlement, supplemental security income
(SSI), family support assistance (AFDC), temporary
assistance to needy families, foster care and
adoption assistance, and more.
This means that 13.3
cents of every dollar you paid in Federal taxes did
all that.
And since we all
know there are people out there who take advantage
of the system and refuse to work (actually, some of
them, in truth, work harder at not working than most
people do actually working), then how much goes to
them?
Less than a penny
from every dollar goes to pay the “scum,” as some
put it.
In our last newsletter, we talked about the book
Free Lunch, and how much of our taxes go to benefit
the wealthy.
So we still
haven’t answered the question: how much of our taxes
go to the wealthy?
Some estimates are
17% of our taxes, but it’s hard to estimate since
the wealthy get money from a vast network of
programs furnished by our tax dollars. One thing we
do know is that the poor and the middle class are
NOT getting any of the bailout. Definitely the
bailout is going to the rich, and how much does that
cost American families?
The bailout cost all
American families $6, 500.00.
Truly, if you take
all this into consideration and still you are
focused on some guy who’s cheating the system and
costing you just pennies, well then, the big guys
who are cheating the system win.
This is classic
“misdirection” as practiced by magicians. The
wealthy want you to focus on the left hand (the
little cheat) while the right hand picks your
pocket.
But you really
should know something about that money you send to
welfare programs: it generates economic activity.
When economic activity is generated, that helps us
all.
Last July, an
economist, Mark M. Zandi, from Moody’s Economy (dot
com) testified before congress. He’d done his
homework and presented them with a table of actions
the Feds take and the economic activity generated by
those actions. So far there have been a lot of
people coming out against his figures, but no one
has been able to supply better figures, just
friction.
Here is the table:
Action
Economic Activity Generated
High “Bang for the Buck”
Temporarily increase food stamps
$1.73
Extend unemployment benefits
$1.64
Provide general aid to state governments
$1.36
Lower “Bang for the Buck”
Extend Alternative Minimum Tax patch
$0.48
Make dividend and capital gains tax cuts
permanent
$0.37
Cut corporate tax rate
$0.30
Make Bush income tax cuts permanent
$0.29
So, as you can see,
giving money to the poor, even those scumbags who
refuse to work, actually helps our entire economy
and keeps jobs available.
And what have we learned from all this? Trickle Down
Economics is dead. R.I.P. It has never worked, will
never work, and has helped lead us to financial
meltdown.
Now, if only someone
can explain to me how a CEO can pay himself half a
billion dollars while the company goes belly up.
This just doesn’t seem to be the capitalism I was
raised to believe in.
Every year, your government gives away
to the wealthy more than enough money to pay for health care
for every person who goes without it, and more, much much
more. Every American must read this book. David Kay Johnston
is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist.
The
banking bailout makes most Americans,
including me, throw up. It looks like a
reward for bad management and greed. Still,
it is the only alternative: if the system
fails, we will end up with a total meltdown
of the economy -- and a repeat of the Great
Depression.
There
has been a lot of talk lately about
"nationalization" of the banks. Neo-cons
call it socialism, as if it were something
new.
In fact,
the government in effect temporarily
nationalized most banks during the Great
Depression. Once they were on their feet,
ownership was returned to private
enterprise.
The same
thing happened again in the early 1980's
with the Savings and Loan crisis. And
it happens once a week or so, year in and
year out, with smaller banks that are
beneath the radar of the national media.
The FDIC
takes over a failing bank (socialism), and
either merges it with a stronger bank, or
pays off the insured deposits and then sells
any assets. The socialism is always
temporary.
What
happened in the dying days of the previous
administration is that money was pumped into
major national banks, without any strings.
The Obama administration is changing that,
and may well take over the huge Citibank in
the coming weeks.
This
cartoon makes fun of the non-nationalization
approach:

What a catch! The
amazing deep-sea
fish with a
transparent head
This
amazing barreleye
fish really does
have eyes in the
back of his head.
Accustomed to living
in the pitch-black
of the deep sea, the
animal has developed
this unique and
incredibly useful
ability to spot
predators trying to
sneak up on it, as
well as potential
food.
The
discovery came when
the fish was filmed
by marine biologists
trying to solve the
50-year-old mystery
of how it uses its
eyes.
For
years scientists
believed its eyes
were fixed and it
only provided a view
of what was directly
above its head.
However it now
emerges that over
time the Macropinna
microstoma has
evolved so its eyes
are able to look out
in different
directions from
within a transparent
shield.
Eyes front: The
barreleye fish has
developed the unique
ability to move its
eyes inside its head
so it can spot
predators and food
in pitch-black seas
While
its body is mostly
dark, the top part
of its head is
transparent, and its
eyes are clearly
visible.
According to
evolutionary
biologists, it
developed such a
powerful sense of
sight as a result of
the harsh
environment it lives
in.
The fish, which is
only a few inches
long, lives at great
depths just below
the line at which
sunlight can
penetrate the water.
The marine
biologists also
found that it uses
its large, flat fins
to remain motionless
in the water.
This means that
creatures around it
cannot see it
clearly. Predators
lurking above it
cannot spot it
either, however it
can look upwards to
hunt for the small
fish and plankton it
lives off.
When a suitable
morsel is
identified, the
barrelfish attacks
out of the darkness
and swiftly engulfs
its prey.
To
avoid looking at the
sun when it moves
into shallower
waters, the
creature's eyes can
rotate to look
forward so it can
see where it is
swimming.
Its amazing eyes
glow a bright-green
and researchers
believe it may have
developed a form of
light filter which
allows it to ignore
the sunlight and
spot the
bioluminescence of
small fish and
jellyfish - it's
favourite food.
Unique: The creature
lurks at depths of
up to 2,600ft where
the sun cannot
penetrate and when
it spots smaller
fish or plankton it
attacks from the
dark and swiftly
engulfs its prey
The two holes which
look like eyes on
the front of the
fish are in fact
nales, olfactory
organs similar to
human nostrils.
The barrelfish has a
crystal-clear liquid
over its eyes, held
in place by a tiny
membrane.
If
that was to break,
its eyes would
become exposed to
the sea and the
pressure that exists
at its natural
depths of between
2,000ft and 2,600ft
would instantly kill
it.

Rachel

Jindal's speech. "I make my living

Keith

On CNN,
David Broder said, "Jindal took pride in
Louisiana's rebuilding effort after the
hurricane, but while he was cutting state
income tax, Washington pumped $167 billion
into the state."

In Minnesota we elect our
supreme court justices. But there's a slight problem;
we've not elected one since we elected Alan Page, an ex
member of the of the Minnesota Vikings famous Purple
People Eaters. We elected him in 1993. Since then, our
judges, in cahoots with our governor, have found ways to
get around elections, and get judges appointed. One
recent appointee had this to say about the system
(paraphrasing): I can't really talk about it since I've
never been a judge.
Nancy is taking on the
system.
Did you know that people,
ordinary people can form a grand jury IF they get the
assistance from ONE judge. However, when you are taking
on judges, one judge willing to buck the system is hard
to find. Even so called LIBERAL judges just don't want
to rock the boat. Anyone who is among them, who stands
up to them, will feel the wrath of the system.
Nancy, however, had finally
gotten our legislators to do something, and last month
they created an ad hoc committee to listen to the
complaints from citizens concerning corrupt judges.
Thomas Jefferson disliked
the Judicial Branch of the government least because it
had the least amount of oversight.
Shortly after 9pm on Tuesday March 24, Wikileaks related
buildings in Dresden and Jena, were raided by
11 plain clothes German police.
Why?
Over the last two years, Wikileaks has exposed detailed
secret government censorship lists or plans for over
eight countries, including Thailand, the United Arab
Emirates, Australia, and Germany.
Although Wikileaks' main site has been censored by the
Chinese Public Security Bureau since early 2007, last
week saw the site placed onto a secret list of sites
"forbidden" by the Australian Media and Communications
Authority, or ACMA.
The
pro-censorship governments exposed by Wikileaks can be
divided into three broad categories:
1.Countries with a mandatory censorship system in
place: Thailand, the UAE, and Lebanon (films).
2.Countries proposing a mandatory censorship
system: Australia and Germany.
3.Countries in which the internet censorship system
is an unregulated agreement between several large ISPs
and the police: Norway, Denmark and Finland.
Australia and Germany are the only liberal democracies proposing a mandatory
internet censorship regime.
All of the schemes operate, or are proposed to operate,
through multi-million dollar national networks of
censorship machines.
The machines spy on the nation as each citizen attempts
to read on the internet, and compares requested pages to
those listed on a secret government "blacklist".
If
the page is on the blacklist, the government forcibly
prevents the citizen from viewing the information by
intercepting his or her internet communication and
diverting it to a machine controlled by the censorship
system. This machine is often configured to record the
identity of the person attempting to access the
forbidden information. If the page is not on the
blacklist, the government grants permission for the
citizen to view the page.
Although originally marketed, in all countries, as a
way of combating child pornography, the blacklists
obtained by Wikileaks show that the systems have already
been corrupted into censoring other content, including
political content.
For
instance, the secret blacklist for Thailand censors
thousands of sites per year deemed to be critical of the
Thai Monarchy, from academic books and YouTube to the
Economist magazine and Wikileaks itself.
Similarly, the blacklist for Australia contains an
anti-abortion site, fringe religions, a dentist clinic,
gay sites, gambling sites, islamist [sic.] sites,
euthanasia activist sites, an astrologer's blog,
misclassified material, and, like Thailand, Wikileaks
itself. Even the Australian government's "Minister
for censorship", Senator Stephen Conroy, has admitted
that fully half of the sites on the secret list are
unrelated to child pornography.
As
newspapers and other publications migrate to an
exclusive life on the internet, such totalizing
censorship systems are able to instantly snatch "pages"
from the laps of citizens across an entire nation,
interdicting communications between publisher and
reader, and the new civil discourse between readers and
each other. The scale, speed and potential impact of
this centralized intervention has no historical
precedent.
Secret national censorship systems are dangerous and
unaccountable. They are an affront to natural justice,
due process and the balancing power of the fourth
estate. They must be, and will be, stopped.
The
Australian Government has stated it plans to increase
the size of its blacklist list by 10 fold, from roughly
1,200 blocked pages to over 10,000, although the plan is
now seems unlikely to pass the Australian Senate after
the revelations of the last month.
* * * * *
To make what has happened clear to those who understand
traditional book censorship, we provide the following
simple analogy:
Within the libraries and book catalogues of Germany and
Australia there are books (web pages) forbidden by the
state.
The government of Australia has compiled a secret list
of books it forbids. About 1,200 books are on the list.
Not even authors or publishers whose books are placed on
the list are told their book has been banned.
Germany plans to adopt and expand a version of the
Australian scheme.
Under the plans of the German and Australian
governments, every attempt to borrow a book (read a web
page) will be checked against the secret "forbidden
books" (forbidden web pages) list.
If a
book is on the list, the attempt to borrow it is noted
down in another secret list and permission is refused.
If the book is not on the blacklist, permission is
granted.
The list of forbidden books (the blacklist) is a
forbidden book.
The lists of books forbidden in other countries are also
forbidden books.
Any book that mentions the title (URL) of a forbidden
book is itself a forbidden book.
An international investigative newspaper (Wikileaks)
reveals key internal documents on the censorship
expansion plans for Germany, Australia and other
countries. For
Australia this expose includes the lists of forbidden
books and the presence of clearly political books on the
list. The newspaper warns that Australia is acting like
a "democratic backwater" and risks following the
censorship path of Thailand.
The
article and lists, and then the entire newspaper
secretly added to the list of publications banned by
Australia.
The
Australian "Minister for censorship", Senator Stephen
Conroy, states "Any citizen who distributes [the
blacklist] is at serious risk of criminal prosecution".
The Minister threatens to refer the leak to the
Australian Federal Police.
That same week, the newspaper releases three more
articles on censorship and updates the lists of
forbidden books.
Two buildings related to the newspaper in Germany are
then raided by 11 plain clothed police. The police
demand the keys (passwords) to a protected room (server)
containing the newspaper's printing press so they can
disable it. The newspaper staff refuse to comply--both
the keys and the press itself have been sent to Sweden,
a country with stronger legal protections for
journalists.
The German police then seize what they believe to be the
newspaper's archives (a hardrive) and a typewriter
(laptop) "for evidence".
* * * * *
The story might end there, but 12 hours after the police
raid, on Wednesday the 25th of March, the German Cabinet
announced the completion of a proposed law for a
nationwide, mandatory censorship system--to be pushed
through before national elections in September, 2009.
For
every noble human desire, in this case, the strong
protective feelings most adults have towards children,
opportunists such as Senator Conroy and his German
equivalent, CDU Minister Ursula von der Leyen, stand
ready to exploit these feelings for their own power and
position.
Von
der Leyen apparently hopes to raise her profile before a
national election by promoting a national censorship
"solution" to child pornography.
But
forcibly preventing the average parent from seeing
evidence of what may be an abuse against a child is not
the same as stopping abuses against children. Absense of
evidence is not evidence of absense.
Censoring the evidence promotes abuses by driving them
underground, where they are difficult to track. Such
schemes divert resources and political will away from
proven policing solutions which target producers and
consumers.
Children depend, even more than their parents, on the
quality and viability of government. An assault against
those systems and ideals which keep government honest
and accountable - public oversight, natural justice, and
protection from state censorship - is not just an
affront to Enlightment ideals, but an assult on the long
term interests of children and adults alike.
The
March 24th raid is not the first time the German state
has attempted to censor Wikileaks; back in December
2008, Ernst Uhrlau, former police chief and current
head of the BND, Germany's equivalent to the CIA,
threatened to prosecute the site unless it removed a BND
dossier on corrupt officials in Kosovo and other
information. The dossier was not removed. There is no
evidence that the police action and the BND incident are
related, but the situation, together with a recent
Bundestag inquiry documenting illegal BND spying on the
German press, does not paint a flattering picture of the
state of German government.
On the first day of college, the Dean
addressed the students:
"The female dormitory is out-of-bounds for
all male students, and the male dormitory to
the female students. Anybody caught
breaking this rule will be fined $20 the
first time. The second time you will be
fined $60. A third time will cost you a fine
of $180. Are there any questions?"
A male student inquired, "How much for a
season pass?"
"The same
people who drove the economy into a ditch
are now complaining about the size of the
tow truck." James McGovern, D. Massachusetts
The pastor asked if anyone
in the congregation would like to express praise for
answered prayers. A lady stood and walked to the podium.
She said, "I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband,
Tom, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was
completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the
doctors didn't know if they could help him."
You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the
congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Tom
must have experienced.
"Tom was unable to hold me or the children," she went
on, "and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed
as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it
turned out they were able to piece together the crushed
remnants of Tom's scrotum, and wrap wire around it to
hold it in place."
Again, the men in the congregation were unnerved and
squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible
surgery performed on Tom.
"Now," she announced in a quavering voice, "thank the
Lord, Tom is out of the hospital and the doctors say
that with time, his scrotum should recover completely."
All the men sighed with relief. The pastor rose and
tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say.
A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium.
He said, "I'm Tom."
The entire congregation held its breath.
"I just want to tell my wife that the word is sternum."
True Story
Some of the true stories we get in our email
are far from true. However, we checked this
one out, and it's true alright. Feel free to
pass it on.
FBI agents conducted a "search and seizure" at the
Southwood Psychiatric Hospital in San Diego, which was
under investigation for medical insurance fraud. After
hours of poring over many rooms of financial records,
some sixty FBI agents worked up quite an appetite. The
case agent in charge of the investigation called a local
pizza parlor with delivery service to order a quick
dinner for his colleagues.
The following telephone conversation took place:
Agent: Hello. I would like to order nineteen large
pizzas and sixty-seven cans of soda.
Pizza man: And where would you like them delivered?
Agent: To the Southwood Psychiatric Hospital.
Pizza man: To the psychiatric hospital?
Agent: That's right. I'm an FBI agent.
Pizza man: You're an FBI agent?
Agent: That's correct. Just about everybody here is.
Pizza man: And you're at the psychiatric hospital?
Agent: That's correct. And make sure you don't go
through the front doors. We have them locked. You'll
have to go around to the back to the service entrance to
deliver the pizzas.
Pizza man: And you say you're all FBI agents?
Agent: That's right. How soon can you have them here?
Pizza man: And you're over at Southwood?
Agent: That's right. How soon can you have them here?
Pizza man: And everyone at Southwood is an FBI agent?
Agent: That's right. We've been here all day and we're
starving.
Pizza man: How are you going to pay for this?
Agent: I have my check book right here.
Pizza man: And you are all FBI agents?
Agent: That's right, everyone here is an FBI agent. Can
you remember to bring the pizzas and sodas to the
service entrance in the rear? We have the front doors
locked.
Pizza man: I don't think so.
Eric and Jenny are only 10
years old, but they know they are in love.
One day they decide that they want to get
married, so Eric goes to Jenny's father to
ask him for her hand.
Eric bravely walks up to him and says, 'Mr.
Smith, me and Jenny are in love and I want
to ask you for her hand in marriage.'
Thinking that this was just the cutest
thing, Mr. Smith replies, 'Well Eric, you
are only 10.
Where will you two live?'
Without even taking a moment to think about
it, Eric replies, 'In Jenny's room. It's
bigger than mine and we can both fit there
nicely.'
Still thinking this is just adorable, Mr.
Smith says with a huge grin, 'Okay then how
will you live?
You're not old enough to get a job. You'll
need to support Jenny.'
Again, Eric instantly replies, 'Our
allowance. Jenny makes five bucks a week
and I make 10 bucks a week. That's about 60
bucks a month and that should do us just
fine.'
Mr. Smith is impressed Eric has put so much
thought into this..
'Well Eric, it seems like you have
everything figured out. I just have one
more question..
What will you do if the two of you should
have little ones of your own?'
Eric just shrugs his shoulders and says,
'Well, we've been lucky so far.'
Mr. Smith no longer thinks the little s**t
is so adorable.
A man and a
woman were having dinner in a fine restaurant. Their
waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces
away noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his
chair and under the table, with the woman acting
unconcerned.
The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down
his chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the
woman dining across from him appeared calm and
unruffled, apparently unaware that her dining companion
had disappeared.
After the waitress finished taking the order, she came
over to the table and said to the woman, "Pardon me,
ma'am, but I think your husband just slid under the
table."
The woman calmly looked up at her and replied firmly,
"No he didn’t. He just walked in the door."
Proud to be a golfer
A recent study found the average American golfer, walks
about 900
miles a year.
Another study found American golfers drink, on average,
22 gallons of
alcohol a year.
That means, on average, American golfers get about 41
miles to the
gallon.
Kind of makes you proud.

Hooked on Phonics strikes again!
In a small town, a vacant storefront was being
remodeled into a tavern.
The local Baptist church started a prayer
campaign to keep the bar from opening.
The night before the pub was to open, lightning
struck the building and burned it down.
The church folks were rather smug in their outlook
after that, till the bar owner sued the church on the
grounds that the church was responsible for the
destruction of his building.
The church vehemently denied all responsibility or
any connection to the lightning strike.
When the case came to court, the judge said, "I don't
know how I'm going to decide this, but as it appears
we have a bar owner that believes in the power of
prayer,
and an entire church congregation that doesn't."
